Shortcut to Vista's "Computer" ("my Computer") only opens one instance

I set up a shortcut to "Computer" in my QuickStart bar some time ago.  Worked fine as a fastpath to "Explorer" and would present a new instance every time (as would navigating to "Computer" via the "Start button" menu).  I have Vista Ultimate on XPS 420.

Today, I had multiple instances of Computer opened for file management.  I was setting up to record to a backup to a successfully created DVD via ROXIO when the application froze.  I got a "Visual C++" popup, but the Roxio screen and the popup failed to present their content - those screens were frozen with a white background.  Closing the "Visual C++" popup seemed to have killed Roxio.  I was not able to get the app restarted, after navigating to it via "Start".  So, I rebooted.

Since the reboot, I can only get one instance of Computer/Explorer when either clicking the shortcut, or navigating to it via Start.  In fact, every subsequent click causes the border to the existing instance to flicker/flash slightly, like it just popped up.  If I navigate to "Network", I can open multiple instances, and essentially achieve the same thing - Explorer.

What can I do to reset this.

Not sure how to restore it, but try holding the shift key down when you click to open multiple windows.

Or use Flag + E keys to open windows explorer as many times as you like.

Thanks for the tip mombodog.

I held down the shift key, as you recommended.  I opened a new instance.  AND...clicking again - without the shift key - opened another instance, and only one more instance.  Strange behavior.

I'd still like to get back to normal (one mouse click and no keyboard work), but for now, I suppose I can lift a finger in a salute to Vista while opening that second instance.
