Slipstream sp2 disk for dim4550

Question

I've have just completed a reinstall of my dim4550 and saw a reference to be able to upgrade to sp2 by a slipstream disk. Created the disk as per Paul Thurrotts's page but about a few minutes into the install it does a restart and then asks me to insert sp2 cd rom? It gave me 2 choices at the start upgrade or new install have tried both but same problem. After this I got the choice of 2 booting programmes 'Windows XP home Edition' or Windows XP setup' I've managed to sort that problem out. Any ideas on the slipstream disk and why it did not work? Yes, a slipstreamed XP disc is just like any reinstallation disc. It's best when you do a clean installation.

After I realized I needed to do a clean installation rather than an upgrade I tried to do that however after changing to boot from the CD to hopefully do  a clean install, it starts like it is going to get the screen with repair or new install etc, and then I still get it asking me to now put the sp2 floppy in drive A. So does anyone know how to get a slipstreamed disk to do a clean install with a system that has XP sp1.   Daz

I know I am booting from the cd as I get "to boot from cd press any button...." It then it goes to the blue windows setup page with the raid drivers bit at the bottom then it asks for the sp2 floppy I think it asks for the floppy as its booting from the cd. I willl try and create another slipstream disk on the off chance I made it wrong.

As I was copying the files to easy cd creator 5 basic it wanted to change some files slightly now I have no idea if this will make a difference but any files with items like $ eg $oem$ it wanted to change to _oem_ is this normal? I do not want to create another slipstream disk if this is the problem why it does not work on the reinstall.

When doing a clean install, it's irrelevant whether you have a pre-SP1 CD, an SP1 or SP2 CD, or a slipstreamed SP1 or SP2 CD. No difference in the process.

Thanks for the pointer. However it does not help as it assumes I get to the windows xp setup for the clean install but I don't as just after is asks if you need to install raid drivers etc it then as me to put in the floppy disk with the sp2 on it. So I don't get to the dos page offering the recovery consule options. It seems that I wasted my time creating a slipstream disk as it won't work on this pc anyway. Has anybody out there done it on a dell so to speak with a slipstream disk going from sp1-sp2?

There is no DOS page you get to for a CLEAN install. I have used a slipstream CD on 4 Dells w/o issue. If you boot to the CD and it asks you to stick in a floppy with SP2, then you either aren't booting to the CD or made the slipstream CD improperly.

Sounds to me like you may have mistaken the term 'clean install' - installing over your existing Windows is not a clean install.  If you run another Windows XP setup disc which is a newer version (in this case your slipstreamed disc), it will be treated as a new setup from your existing installation.   One way to perform a clean install is to delete the partition on which your current Windows installation resides and create a new partition on which your new installation will go. I understand what you are saying but how can I get to the screen to delete the partition prior to installing the slipstream version if as you say the slipstream disk is seen as an upgrade and will not let me get to the point where I can delete the partition. I mean if I put in the orginal sp1 disk I will be able to get to where I can delete the partition but how will I change the disks over? Or am I missing something here.

I should mention when I get to the point were it asks for the sp2 disk it offers 2 choices to continue installation or to quit.

If our disc is working correctly, you should see the partition list after the license agreement screen (where you press F8 to continue) and after you press ENTER to elect to setup Windows - it should not be different from using the Dell Installation CD.   Would it be possible to describe every single screen you see (from 'Press any key to boot from CD' to where it asks you for your SP2 CD) if you were to boot up using your slipstream disc?  I'm not quite sure what stage of the setup process you are describing here.   If your computer has a floppy drive, an alternative is to use a Windows 98 bootdisk, delete the partition using FDISK then boot from the CD to start your Windows XP setup. Thanks for your help so far. This is the sequence of screens:-

1. Press any key to boot from cd...

2. (black screen) Setup is checking your hardware configuration.

3. (blue screen) Windows setup(top left) Press f6 to install any sici or raid drivers(bottom)

4. (blue screen) Windows setup(top left) Please insert floppy disk containing sp2. Press enter to continue or f3 to quit setup (middle of screen)

thats what happens with the slipstream disk in the disk drive
