Slow boot after sp1
Hi all,
Have any of you noticed a slower boot after sp1 install?
Just to describe the process: Dell logo appears......bios screen appears. All ok so far.
Then the problem: After the bios screen goes away, I get a black screen for 5-10secs. Then the green bar appears and stays on way longer than before sp1. Then after that screen disappears, there's another black screen for 10secs.
This never happened before the service pack install. It all ran smoothly from one screen to the other.
Any ideas? I'm pulling my hair out trying to find what's wrong!
Thanx

The first boot after installing SP1 I noticed a difference. It seemed much slower to shutdown, start etc.
I timed the subsequent ones and usually go from pushing the power button to my desktop in about 40-45 seconds. If I let everything load before operating it's usually around 1:45 to 2:00 minutes. Shutdown ranges from 30-40 seconds from the click of shutdown to the computer turning off. These times are about the same for my E1705, 1720 and my 420's.
I don't think these numbers are that long, but to others they might be. I don't know the proper ranges.

Have you tried a Defrag since installing SP1?
This helped for me after I installed SP1.

Shut down on my pc is about 10 seconds!!
I've booted up at least 10 times after sp1 install now, and nothing's changed :(

Me too. My boot time after installing SP1 is also much longer than without.
I had run the SP1 RC's and was really happy at the overall improvement. Boot time was quicker. My PC just seemed to run smoother and quicker.
Just before SP1 final was released, I re-formatted my HD and reinstalled Vista (HP), so there was no leftovers from the RC's. No problems with the OS reinstall. And everything was verified to be working fine, until SP1 final was installed.
But I have found that the final SP1 doesn't run anything like the RC's I tried. Boot is slower. The overall PC response is slower with SP1 final. It's just not as good as the RC's.
Also, I've had a few hiccups with some apps with SP1 final that I didn't have with the RC's. One that stands out is Nero 8; it has been doing some weird things. I have reinstall Nero a few times, but the same problems pop up again. It must be SP1 final.

First boot was slow after installing SP1.
Everytime I have added peripherals or software.... any changes in the system BIOS whatsoever.... then again ther first boot is slow..... afterwards, SP1 appears to be faster than before.
* I have noticed this before and always credited it to Indexing or something and really never worried about it... as it really does not affect me much.... I hardly reboot my Beast! Running 24/7 :)
Peace

It's not indexing. I keep mine off. Most likely the pre-fetch needing to be rebuilt.
First boot took about 2 1/2 minutes from selecting the OS (dual boot) till Vista comes up. Time kept decreasing to 1 1/4-1 1/2 minutes. However, initial boot opened Vista with none of my initial programs loaded yet. These programs then loaded faster than before SP1. After many re-boots, Vista comes up with many of my initial programs already loaded. Overall boot time till everything is loaded is significantly less than pre-SP1 .
Shut down is much faster now, similar to XP, around ten seconds vs. 30 sec. before SP1.

I'm with you on that one, Spotteddog......definitely thinking along the same lines.
Keep getting these black screens during each phase of booting process, as said before in my opening post.

Good. It's not just me then. :smileyhappy:
I emailed M$. They have free support for SP1. They will probably just say to reinstall everything, but I'll post back here, if they have any useful ideas.

Went back and forth with Microsoft. Ended up with them saying they are aware of the problems with SP1 and are working to resolve them. "...it may take our product group some time to improve the situation". :smileyindifferent:

Well, I finally stumbled on the solution.
I stopped using readyboost a while ago, because I bought more RAM and didn't feel it an improvement to keep readyboost going.
So I deactivated readyboost in "services.msc". Big mistake!!
What I didn't realise is that within the prefetch folder, there's another folder called "readyBOOT" and this traces the boot process in Vista. It leaves a trace of the boot and finds out what devices/processes are needed on bootup, then optimises the boot.
After having reactivated readyboost in services, and therefore readyBOOT too, my boot time has gone from 2 minutes to 45 seconds!!!
I think tweaking the services is a good thing and can speed / has sped thing up on my pc, but it just goes to show you what a wrong move can make!!
I'm a happy chappy again :) Hope this will be a help / lesson to others that have made the same mistake....
Thanks for all your help.....
