Slow Computer

Hi All,

I have read a few threads to see if that would answer my question but seem to be at a loose end.  My computer runs slow initially, to get the program going but then seems to sort itself out.  However it freezes from time to time also for about 5 s.  Internet explorer is probably the worse, with freezes before i opening each new page.  Have run spy sweeps, and also virus scan with Norton, but still cannot figure it out.  Have also tried MSCONFIG however still no change?

Can anyone point me in a direction as to what it could be.  I have a 3.06 ghz pent 4, with 512 ddr ram.  80 gig HD with 40 gig of that spare, and have run a defrag last night.  However to delete programs i use an 'eraser' tool as it says it recovers more of the space, could this be the problem?  The system idle is always running at 99 percent generally however CPU usage is around 4%, and i have a few new .exe files running, anyone know what they are?    wdfmgr.exe and wuauclt.exe, ctsvcda.exe, symwsc.exe, ccpxysvc.exe.

Can i run any programs to test for problems, which i can run in windows? (XP home)

Thanks

Ryan

Go to the following site and follow the directions to download and run the analysis tool called HijackThis.

Generate a log file, then open it and copy and paste the text of the log file in a message in one of the following forums:

where a certified HijackThis expert can offer advice on how to fix the problem:

First off, download the firefox browser by Mozilla and say Good-bye to Microyuck's IE. Now to your processes and what they are.

wdfmgr - wdfmgr.exe - Process Information

Process File: wdfmgr or wdfmgr.exe
Process Name: Windows Driver Foundation Manager

Description:
wdfmgr.exe is part of Microsoft Windows media player 10 and above. This process decreases compatibility problems whilst the product is in use. This program is non-essential process to the running of the system, but should not be terminated unless suspected to be causing problems.

wuauclt.exe is some sort of WIndows update program

ctsvccda - ctsvccda.exe - Process Information

Process File: ctsvccda or ctsvccda.exe
Process Name: Creative CD-ROM Services

Description:
ctsvccda.exe this process was authored by Creative Labs, and is usually installed alongside Soundblaster card drivers or some Creative Labs applications. It assists Windows manage the CD-Rom on Windows 9x and Me systems, however it has no use on faster CD-Rom drives.

symwsc.exe is for your Symantec anti-virus, firewall or some program along those lines, as well as

Process File: ccpxysvc.exe   Process Name: Symantec Common Client Proxy Service

  Description:

ccpxysvc.exe is a service which is essential to Norton Antivirus and Norton Personal Firewall's functioning. This program is important for the stable and secure running of your computer and should not be terminated.

Is this by chance an upgraded system from another OS? Also do a search for tweak XP and see what services you can stop from running automatically, but proceed VERY carefully and backup your files and registry. Minimize the amount of your programs that are in your startup folder and also in your system tray (down by your clock). The more icons you have showning loaded, the less memory you have.

Hope this helps...

Shawn
