Slow computer

Brand new dimension 2400 home computer - 6 months old.  Overnight, is now super slow.  Take 2 minutes to boot up, when I click on desktop icons, hour glass remain for at least 30 seconds before anything comes up - you watch things download inch by inch down the screen.  Freezes often.  Scanned for spyware - negative.  This computer used for excel/word and internet access only - no crazy downloads or anything taking up space - can't find anything wacky on hard drive.  Any suggestions on where to start?

Try running the "CHKDSK" program.
Open "Windows Explorer" or "My Computer" and rightclick once on the Local Disk C: then choose properties. When the properties window opens, choose the Tools tab-then select "Check Now" in the error-checking section. You can put a tick in the "Automatically Fix File System Errors" box and the "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors" box. When you click Start you will be told that Windows will run this program on the next restart of your PC-select OK and restart your computer. This program takes time while it fixes your hard drive so be patient and let it run! It will restart your computer when it's done and return you to Windows.

Next try doing a system "Disk Defragment" by clicking on the Start Menu then click on "All Programs, then Accesories then System Tools then finally "Disk Defragment" Let that run to and if your system is really messed up it may take awhile too!

Let me know how this works out for ya!

that is wierd. I have a dell dimension 2400 as well. Since i start school now i leave it on all night to virus scans and such. If you leave it on all night lock it using the windows key and l at the same time. if you have no passwords just click the icon to log back in withough losing work. Um go to google and type in AVG FREE type it in and download it from the company site. Works great for me. Also go to microsoft.com and download microsoft antispyware beta works great for me. Try it out and let me know

Go into your Bios and check your cpu and see if it is set to normal not compatible. also I would do a disk clean up and then get rid of all my cookies and then to a defrag and after defraging click on view and if you see files still in the square ,defrag again sometimes you have to defrag more than once to clear the square. You can also go into msconfig and under start up you can uncheck almost all of them if you have norton  antivirus leave ccapp checked that is norton antivirus ,you need that one checked.Have a great holiday!
