Slow performance systems?

Question

I purchased a Dell XPS 410 system from Dell last summer. My employer is a Dell partner, I got a 'deal':smileysad:. I place some of the blame for the way this PC runs on me, if I had done my home work I wouldn't be posting. I tried the Chat session, it works nice but is time consuming. After researching slow system performance on the web, I have answered my own question. By selling me Windows Vista with just one gig, Dell sold me a system that is marginal at best. So OK I could spend the $75.00 with them for 2 more gigs, but will my system might recognize the total of 3 gigs? And then I realize that I have a 32 bit version of Vista when my processors are 64 bit. Pretty much all the reading I have done here and at Microsoft implies that I can't install the 64 bit version on my PC. So my question is, how much ram should I get? One more gig or two? I don't want to spend anymore money at Dell than I have to. Thanks for reading and any replies I get:smileyhappy:.   Jeff

One thing, you desktop has 2 banks 4 sockets and can read up to 4gb of memory. There are other places to order memory than Dell, just do a google search. I have a laptop with 4gb, my system uses almost 1gb of ram just sitting running. When I start opening programs more is used. So if you increase memory, the system should run better. Try to always match pairs, that works better.

You need a minimum of 2 gig of ram for Vista, 3 gigs is the sweet spot. Yes it will see all 3 gigs of ram. You can purchase and install 64bit Vista, but do your research and make sure there are drivers available. You don't have to purchase ram from Dell it's over priced, you can go to Crucial web site and purchase at a good price.

newegg also has a memory finder as well as crucial. You can have it search your system or type in manufacturer and model number. I am sure other sites that sell memory have these apps as well. Oh and BTW your warrranty is not voided with non-Dell memory. If you want their help, you may need to reinstall however...

Click the link above and you will see all of the 64 bit drivers for your computer ! But you do need to do your home work for the other 64 bit drivers as in printer and other hardware and software most 32 bit software will work for 64 out right or in XP compatible mode but if it has to install a 32 bit driver it will not work at all !! If you install Vista 64, you will be able to see all 4GB of RAM. With Vista 32, limit is about 3.2GB. With 3 GB installed, you will see ~3.1GB unless your video board has more than 256MB. 3GB makes for a more responsive system than with 2GB +/- Readyboost.

The Vista 64 installation will install all the drivers you need to run the SYSTEM, but as stated above, other drivers are not as readily available for 64 bits except for video and major hardware.
