SLOW XP BOOT UP
Hi,
I have a new Dimension 5150 running Xp media edition.
The machine runs fine once up. However, it takes between 8 and 15 minutes to boot!
Basically, it hangs on the splash screen with three blue boxes showing. After 8 to 15 minutes the boxes start moving across the screen and the machine is then fine.
Any ideas?

A somewhat contraversial suggestion is to (from Start|Run) enter this command (it won't hurt) :
prefetch
Edit\Select All
File\Delete
Failing that you could run a defrag.

Thanks,
I tried your suggestions but without success.
I've also tried taking the network cable out to see if this makes a diiference but it rmains painfully slow to boot. Even the diagnostics have failed to show a problem.
I'm beginning to feel tyhe best approach could be to re-install everything - The machine hasn't worked properly from the first reboot.
Unfortunately, Dell don't provide XP disks/ CDs with the system. Can I use someone else's XP Media edition installation disk and enter the product key given by Dell?
Or are there any other suggestions?

You must have some options other than the cd for doing a clean install. Symantec Restore ? Doubt if another person's cd would work but either way it wouldn't be right. You shouldn't have to resort to theft to repair your computer.
If you know how to boot to your BIOS(Setup) you could Restore Defaults (paraphrased) and reboot. If no change set the C: (Hard Drive) as the first boot device AND/OR DISable "Quick Boot" option; sounds counter-intuitive I know.
I would also do an online virus scan at Symantec or Trendmicro(.com)
If you're familiar with registry editing look at this page.
