SmartStep 200N Notebook random shutdown

Hi everyone,

I've got a Dell SmartStep 200N system.  Last Summer, I had a problem with the system randomly shutting down.  I sent it to Dell under warranty to have it fixed, and for a while it's been working fine.  Now the problem seems to be happening again, and my warranty has expired.  I'm not sure if it's an OS or a hardware problem, as the machine seems to totally shut down.  Anyway, has anyone else had this experience?  Thanks.

You probably already figured it out (it's been 10 months since you posted this), but your heat sink fan and associated hardware was caked with/full of dust and caused the computer to overheat - then radomly shut down.

The back and side fan vents must be vacuumed out (must be a high suction vacuum) or blown out with a can of high pressure air every few months in a low-dust area, or every month in a high-dust area of the country.  This solves the random shut down problem completely.

Mine was shutting down every day, and every time I ran programs like virus-check or defragmenter, etc.  Dell is not alerting their technicians to the problem, so don't try to call them about it.

Hope this helps...this is a common problem with SmartSteps.
