smax4pnp - Runtime Error!

After a bit of random surfing, I did a virus scan (Norton), rebooted, and got the following message:

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library

Runtime Error!

Program: C\Program Files\Analog Divices\Core\smax4pnp.exe

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.

Please contact the application's support team for more information.

Now there appears to be quite some chatter on the internet regarding this application. Is it Malware or not?

One answer is that smax4pnp.exe can be a genuine application…..depending on where its located. According to this weblink
http://www.runscanner.net/files/exe/smax4pnp/smax4pnp.exe.aspx it should be located in …..\Analog Devices\Soundmax, and anywhere else is suspicious. However, other websites refer to it as being in ….\Analog Devices\Core, as per my location above.

Has anybody got any opinions on this?

I wont normally be too bothered, but it was more a case of how and when it happened. Plus now the discrepency of where it should be located, and the uncertainty of why I have it at all (Ive got Soundblaster not Soundmax).

Cheers.

Perhaps you could submit a sample of the file:
to Virus Total --
http://www.virustotal.com/en/indexf.html

At the top of the page you will see:
Select file>Browse>Send
Just follow the prompts.
The submission will then be tested against many different AV vendors’ scanners.
That will give you an idea what it is and who recognizes it. In addition, unless told
otherwise, Virus Total will provide the sample to all participating vendors.

This might help clear up at least a little bit of it:  Didn't post what model PC it is, but do you have an actual Soundblaster PCI card, or integrated audio with the Soundblaster Audigy HD/MB software add-on

If it's the software, it's not a true Soundblaster device, only an emulator.  You're still using the original ADI (Soundmax), Sigmatel, or Realtek device and still need the basic drivers.

Despite what I previously said, I have the integrated Soundmax audio card, so I guess it is required.

And when I tried to quarentine the file with Norton it said 'Known good file...will not quarentine', or something to that affect.

Guess I just need to update the driver.
