Software downloading
As a first time user, I am hoping somebody out there can help me.
Recently bought a Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop, and have been attempting to download Vista versions of the application software that I have used on my Tower XP PC in the past e.g. Canon Camera software, MP4 Conversion software etc.
As I go to each site, and attempt to perform the download, I get the MS 'Run / save / cancel' Window, and click on 'Run'.
I then immediately get another window saying that IE cannot access the site I am downloading from, followed by a second line saying ' The connection with the server was reset'.
Obviously the download then fails to take place.
I've tried downloading the same software using my Tower PC (albeit using XP), as well as using the same wireless router, broadband connection and ISP, and it works fine. So I am guessing it is something to do with a setting on the Inspiron.
Any ideas as I am chaffing at the bit to get the best out of my new laptop, but am getting pretty frustrated at the delays in getting the software that I use installed

Safu. Many thanks for the response which was very similar to one provided by the Dell Support desk. Unfortunately, having followed the advice provided by both of you, the problem persists, in exactly the same manner as before. Any further ideas would be gratefully accepted.

Sofu. Many thanks again for the response. No I haven't tried that but will do so shortly. However, in the meantime, I have been able to get somewhat further with a diagnosis....but in some ways it has confused me even more! I have used a friend's PC using Vista to download the relevant software from the Canon Cameras website, although it was connected via a different ISP.
Second, I have found that downloading some Epson software for my new Dell Laptop, worked absolutely fine.
So now you can guess, I am really puzzled......the Canon website works fine with Vista, and I can apparently download from some sites, but not others.
So am thinking that resetting the IE settings in the Advanced tab, may not be the answer after all. By the way, Dell have come back and said if the IE settings don't fix it, then all I can do is call their software support team

Harley. Thanks for the update. Two more suggestions:
1. Try running IE as Administrator. To do this right click on the IE icon and choose Run as administrator.
2. Could the security level settings for the Internet be set too conservatively in your security program. BTW what security program is installed?

Thanks again. Tried the Administrator route...again with the same response. I am using Norton BTW.
Next step will be to start the download on my XP machine, and compare IE settings on both to see if there are any obvious differences.

haven't had a chance to compare the XP IE settings with the Vista Laptop yet, as I've been a bit busy this weekend
