Software error code 0xC004E002 - Inconsistent Data
Hi Everyone!
Hopefully someone can help me. I have not installed or done anything to my Dell Laptop and there is now an error message showing "0XC004E002 - Software data is inconistent". There is a black screen in the background (I have Vista by the way) and i can only get to explorer via clicking on the link, to get online support. Once i click ok on the error message it logs me out again. I have tried rebooting in safe mode, putting the Vista repair and install CD in, but i cant do it in safe mode and i am not sure what else to try?
Thanks in Advance......

According to what I find HERE that is a Vista activation issue and you get that if Vista was not activated within the required period. However, Dell's are not supposed to require activation.
You should have a Dell recovery partition on the hard drive (F8 to access at initial boot up) and that will restore the PC to the original factory condition (and will wipe out any user data) but that should get you back working. I don't know of any other method since the system assumes it was never activated.
If you are still in warranty call Dell (but be prepared to do the reinstall as that is probably what they will have you do).
The Dell reinstallation procedure is listed here. Click Me

Hi Fireberd, Thank you for your help. My warranty expired 2 weeks ago, but i might call Dell and see if i can pay to have it extended.
Pardon my ignorance, but does "wipe out any user data" mean all pictures etc will be wiped from my hard drive?
Thanks again!

Yes, when you do a complete reinstall any user data is lost (erased or "wiped out"). Many never do backups of data and this is a prime example of why periodic backups are need - not for "if" you need it but for "when" you need it.
