Software Instalation Problems

Hi there! I wonder if someone can help me with a problem I am having with installing and running a language learning program (Smart Start Japanese from Syracuse Language). It has been running fine for a number of years on windows XP and on my previous systems. Suddenly, I was unable to use it so I clicked uninstall and attempted to reinstall. Now when I click on setup, I am presented with a dialogue box entitled '16 bit Windows Subsystem', with the comment: C:\ WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application. My knowledge of computing is fairly basic, so if somone knows why this has suddenly occurred, please could you explain in fairly simple tems, how to resolve. Many thanks, Andy
