Unless you have already done so, disconnect from the internet, uninstall and reinstall without any anti-virus running and all other programs closed. Reboot and reconnect to the internet.
If you still have no luck and as you say, it's working for others, I will suggest that when you installed it the first time, something went wrong and there are references left by the program in registry. On an attempted reinstall, it probably sees these entries and subsequently fails to load properly.
I note that there are forum members who avoid registry cleaners, I am touching a piece of wood and will say that, over many years, I have had no trouble with them. Reg Clean at http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,4666-order,1-page,1-c,systemresourcestuneup/description.html# was originally distibuted by Microsoft, although Microsoft never officially supported it.
I have it on my machine and have never had any trouble. It even creates a backup / undo file for you.
If you feel happy to do this, uninstall your program and run Reg Clean.
Again, download a fresh copy of the program, disconnect from the internet and disable anti-virus programs, close down as much as will close down and install the fresh copy.
What I did forget to say was,
we bought two identical computers at same time, last christmas.
I also tried installing on other computer, also XP, and encountered same problems.
This afternoon, two more people, friends of friends, installed and tried the program.
None had problems. Different sites were used to download, and no problems.
