software program to backup files in Windows 98 SE
Does anyone know which FREE software I can download; to back up my files with, that will fit Windows 98 Second Edition? I looked in Download.com, and it was too confusing. Too many choices. The one I picked, turned out to need another download to make it work! An 8 hr download ,no less. I had a shop reinstall my Microsoft 2000, and it createdan automatic backup to any files I used. Since then, I have reinstalled my older version of Word 2000, and it doesn't have a backup program on it. I am not a computer person. I am a writer. All I need it for is to back up written text. Any suggestions?

The reason for my initial suggestion was that the HDD is the least reliable place for backups...and, removable media is very inexpensive and multiple copies virtually ensure the content.

That said, you will find a number of suggestions at the link below (including, Karen's Replicator) which are clearly marked whether "Shareware" or "Freeware". FWIW, I've not used the previously mentioned utility by Karen Kenworthy however, I've used several of her other offerings and every one has been very lightweight on the system and performed it's designed task perfectly.
