Sonic isum_hotfix.exe does not work as they state

I was having this very problem with my new 9150 and was about to call tech support when I ran across the announcement of this today. But when I go and do everything exactly step by step, it does NOT fix the problem. As a matter of fact, when you click on yes to reboot, you get a message that comes up saying that the program failed to initialize because windows is shutting down. Have tried it several times and many different ways and it doesn't work. I really like this Sonic program and want to use it. Any help?

If you have the re-installation cd, follow these instructions completely and it will work but you must have the cd. Email them through customer support under missing items in my order and tell them that you need the re-installation cd for the Sonic Digital Media and My DVD and it will arrive at your door the next day.

  1. Start by removing Sonic Software using the "Add/Remove Programs" utility in Windows. (Start menu-->Settings-->Control Panel).
  2. Manually uninstall all Sonic software from your machine. Delete all the files as follows:
    • Delete the "Sonic" folder in your C drive's Program Files folder.
  3. Go In to the "Application Data" folder (C:\Documents and Settings\--Your name--\Application Data) and delete the Sonic folder. Note: This folder may be hidden and will have to be exposed. To do this:
    • From the Windows Explorer window, Select "Tools"-->"Folder Options".
    • Select the "View" tab.
    • Under the "Hidden Files and Folders", select the radio button "Show Hidden Files and Folders"
    • Click the "Apply" button. "Application Data" should now be visible.
  4. Delete the "Sonic Shared"/"Sonic" folders from "Common Files" folder (C:\Program Files\Common Files).
  5. Registry Edit instructions:
    • Select the "Start" menu-->Select "Run"--->Type: regedit. Click "OK".
    • Open the "HKEY_CURRENT_USER" folder ---> Open the "Software" folder then right click and delete the "Sonic" folder.
    • Open the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" folder---> Software--> Sonic. Select the "Sonic" folder, right click on it and delete.
  6. Reboot your computer (stops services so registry can be written correctly)
  7. Re-install the software.

Download and Install the Installshield Update Manager (used by Sonic) and see if the issue is corrected:

I might have found a much simpeler solution. I used system restore to get back my previous settings after the Corel uninstall messed up Sonic. Now I've got a message about a new Corel update "fixing a problem where uninstalling Photo Album would mess up shared update software". I haven't tried it yet, but it might be the solution. If it is, the bug is definitely a Corel bug.

I dont know what the problem is.  But I am just using media player to burn cds for now.  I dont have the  CD so that is of no help.  The hotfix didnt work and I am not that computer savvy so I dont know what else to do.I dont know when to system restore TO...thats my problem.  I dont know how long its been messed up as I dont use that program often enough to have noticed it any earlier.

meeka6,
go back up to my post and follow the instructions that are detailed out about doing a complete uninstallation and re-installation but you have to have a copy of the Sony My dvd backup cd which you can get from dell by emailing them through customer support. Tell them exactly that you need the application re-installation cd of the Sony Digital Media My DVD software and it will arrive to you. Without the cd you can't really do anything if nothing else is working. It will require a complete uninstall and re-install. It's not difficult at all, the directions I posted are very detailed and you can follow them easily once you get the cd in hand. It will fix your problem and Sonic will be working like brand new.

No, the front of the cd that you need is exactly as reads on the cd:

It's a blue Application cd from Dell and it reads:

Already Installed on your computer

For Reinstalling Sonic DigitalMedia v7 LE and MyDVD 6.11 LE Software

This is the one you will need to get Dell to send you if you don't have it. Once you have the cd in hand, follow my instructions, re-install the software from THIS cd and you are good to go.

No need meeka, you say you don't know from what point you should restore your system with System Restore. Just use the System Restore point that is automatically created when you uninstall Corel. You can find it easily by searching some dates for the "Uninstall Corel blablabla" or so points.

The isum_hotfix worked first time for me, after I had had the same problem caused by uninstalling Corel Photo Album 6. However, I did it in the following (safe) way.
1. Uninstall Corel (I used their utility zapps.exe).
2. Reboot into safe mode, to ensure that none of the involved software is running.
3. Execute isum_hotfix patch.
4. Reply "no" when it asks whether to reboot. (Only after that reply does the patch seem to get installed.)
5. Reboot into normal mode.
Good luck to anyone needing to do this messy fix.
