There are actually several ways to check for updates.

1st, you can open the Installshield Update Manager and check manually for any updates for the applications on your computer that use the utility  -OR- set it to automatically check for updates for any apps that use their program to update.  You can also open the Sonic software and under the Help Menu (the question "?" mark), select "Check for Updates" to manually check.  I might note that the option to update will not be present unless the Update Utility is installed and functional.  Also in the Sonic program under "Options" is a checkbox for setting auto-updates.

Personally, I see no reason to have either the Sonic Software or the Installshield Program checking for auto-updates.  I do have both the (Installshield & Sonic) programs installed simply for, the convenience of occasionally checking manually for updates and avoiding having to navigate through the Support section to locate them individually.  These are not programs that receive nor require frequent updates so IMHO, the auto-update is simply unnecessary.
