SP2 and can't get internet

Question

I installed SP2 on one of my network PCs and it stopped all internet access!!! I even stopped the SP2 firewall to see if that cures it. Nope. No problem with network connection with other PCs on the network though.   I removed SP2 and internet access is back.   How can I install SP2 and not have this problem?   Thanks, Hiran

How are you connecting to the Internet? Dialup, broadband, etc.

SP2 has a lot of built in internet filters and firewall features,  Are you running any virus protection programs that include firewall protection or pop-up blockers?  They may be clashing with each other.  That is what happened to me.  After un-installing my 'Mcafee Privasy Service and Firewall' components, I was again able to access the internet.  These components can then be replaced by the same features provided by SP2.  Just a thought.....

My mom just installed sp2 and has the same problem. She called comcast and they say it's not them; I got on the phone with her and had her check her network connections and her cable network says it's working. Windows Firewall is off. McAfee is on at her usual settings (virus and FW).

She's also getting a message that her HP printer is disconnected. It isn't.

She's 78 and this is her connection to the world; I'm desparate to help her long-distance but don't have a Dell and of course sp2 loaded on my IBM T30 without a hitch.

If you (or anyone else) find a solution to your connectivity problem please do post it - I'd like to try to walk my mom through the steps! She's hard of hearing and can't always understand the Dell tech support, though she's willing to call.

Kate, I uninstalled SP2 and my gateway to the internet was restored. When I reinstalled it it was OK for a bit and then started stalling again - it hangs sometimes and sometimes gives me 'page not found'. When it does work it is very slow.

I had the problem with my printer also! (Lexmark Z35) I found that in the Windows Firewall dialog the PnP 'block' was unselected. When I selected it my PC recognised the printer and now works normally.

The simplest way is through Add/Remove programs. Or even System Restore. How to remove Windows XP Service Pack 2 from your computer:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/875350

I sure hope it doesn't come to that...I glanced at the uninstall how-to and it was beyond me, never mind coaching my mom through it. Unless there's a simple way to uninstall, I'd hate to attempt it (if you know of a simple sp2 uninstall how-to, I'd appreciate a link).

I'm glad you got connectivity back; do you intend to reinstall and try to work through the problem at some point?

The warning is for those programs installed or updated after SP2 was installed. I would not recommend SR as a means to 'uninstall' SP2 either, but it's an option, as always. Message Edited by jmfmvps on 10-24-2004 06:55 PM

Before doing anything drastic, have her turn her pc off and reset her Comcast modem by unplugging or switching off for 30 secs. Then turn the modem on and when all the lights are on, turn the pc on.

The instructions in this Dell forum says uninstall through Add/Remove Programs, which is what I did. I thought it says do not use System Restore?   Really funny thing ... when uninstalling SP2  it warned me 'Your computer has following programs installed. BullsEye, 180SearchAssistant, WebRebates, Win Comm (all adware BTW). These programs might not work if you uninstall SP2' !!!!!!!!!   Yes, I will see if the experience is different without SP2 for about a day or two.   Hiran

Hiran, this may be a ridiculous favor/question to ask, but could you tell me the steps your dell told you to take when you uninstalled sp2 on your dell? I can do it on my ibm, and plan to later, in order to be able to coach my mom through via telephone. But I want to make sure there are no weird odd things that happen on dell that might not show up on my ibm - you know, like having to go off and handle some other task before you can continue - that sort of thing.

Essentially, I plan to tell her to follow the screen instructions (she'll read them to me and I'll help her decide what to do); I anticipate having to tell her to say "no to all" if there are any shared files that shouldn't be deleted, correct?

If this is a stupid question for you, I apologise -- perhaps I'm making a mountain out of a molehill and it'll go smoothly :).
