I've done a search using Google and others, along with the Microsoft and DELL websites; I have had no luck so far on finding information regarding error code 87FF004.
I have tried the installs from two different CD's that I had ordered and received from Microsoft. Those CD's were used in the sucessful installation on my other computers. When the installed failed using the CD's, I used the downloaded version that Windows Update had already downloaded but had not been run.
I also contacted DELL Support by email; the response was nothing more than to take the steps posted on their Support site regarding SP2, which I had already tried.
I did searches on Yahoo! and Netscape for that error code (half knowing that if it wasn't found on Google, I probably wouldn't find it either), and wasn't surprised to find that I came up empty as well. One thing I'm unclear about, though. Were you able to successfully install SP2 on your system, or was this the actually reason code given for a failed installation? I even looked in my Windows Updates "Installation History" to see if there was an update code that matched the one you provided, but there was nothing even close.
I did install SP2 on my 8200 and 2350 but cannot get it to install on my 8300. No error messages show up during the install; it just gets about a third of the way through the process and then 'stalls'. I can not cancel; I have to use Task Manager and then it shows that the "program is not responding'.
I only found this code because I went to Windows Update and I had not only tried to install from the CD, but had tried twice from the automatic download. Shows that the downloaded installation failed twice and then lists that error code. Error code doesn't do much good though if no one, including Microsoft, know what it is and how to get around it.
That code almost looks like a memory address; perhaps you should run some diagnostics on your RAM to rule that out first. After that I would run qfecheck, belarc, and System File Checker and then retry. You have run AdAware, chkdsk, defrag, and used the msconfig command to prevent all checked programs from starting. Use a cd and do this offline (cause you won't have a firewall up.) Clear out any temp folders that may come into play during the install, eg Windows Temp, installation folders still holding the SP2 files, etc.

That error code, as written, is not in google or mamma; check this file and see if there's any clues:
windowsupdate.log
PS You'll have a better chance of getting a good install if you order the cd from MS.
