Scan for a virus. If clean run this command:

sfc /scannow (note space)

Then re-try. Post back.

Did the sfc /scnnow; no erros messages or list. Resintalled SP2 and stalled again at installing drvmain.sdb The system is a Dell 8250 XP PRO.
yesterday, I tried renaming drvmain.sdb to drvmain.xxx and drvmain.sdb is created within seconds. This file is located in windows\AppPatch folder.
Unforunately the user of the computer is on break-week, not able to ask about recent history of programs etc...

Thanks for the quick response.

Make a restore point. Looks like a driver is the problem. Check the Device Manager for yellow or red marks. If all ok it still wouldn't hurt to upgrade the video driver. "Check System Compatibility" off an XP cd preferrably his. Update the BIOS if you're familiar with this. Run chkdsk. Again, make sure you're clean. These ideas should help but post back if they don't. If all else fails you could try this link

I created restore point. Checked the Device Manager There were no yellow or red marks. I did upgrade the video drivers from Dell. Ran chkdsk, there were segments which needed fixing, I did that. Reloaded virus protection. Then I followed the suggestion for CLEAN BOOT install. It worked!
I did not upgrade the BIOS, yet.

Thank you very much.

The user returned and it turns out he has Sony PDA, which he uninstalled the software, but left the PDA USB base plugged in. Before doing the above; I unplugged the base unit but still ran into the drvmain issue. I can't help thinking that the PDA base had something to do with it.
