SP2 problem
When installing SP2, after completing all the recommended steps , my computer does not recognize either of my usb ports. There are no driver updates available that I can find for my system, so I am stymied. Any advice?

I uninstalled all entries and then reinstalled after scanning for new hardware.

if you rolled back your driver, then you are running pre service pack usb drivers which means you have just disabled usb 2 support on your system. usb 2.0 support was introduced with service pack 1. from what i gather, what youve done is rolled back to the previous driver which means the pre usb 2 support driver. its hard to say. usually you get that message when you plug a usb 2 device into a usb 1 port. essentially its telling you that your device is capable of transferring at a much faster speed, but your port (because its usb 1) is limiting its speed.
i guess the question to ask you is this: are your usb 2 devices transferring at full speed (480 mbps)? if so, then great, if not then you need to do as this posting suggests and uninstall all the usb listings and then scan for hardware changes and let windows reinstall the drivers automatically.

My devices perform at full speed most of the time. When I am pushing the bus too hard (ie too much IO) I will get an error, and it appears as though the sysem drops the whole bus back to USB 1.1 levels, as I start getting the pop-ups that my devices would perform better if I plugged them into a USB 2 port. When that happened, I would go into the device manager and remove the USB controllers and let Windows re-detect them and it would work fin again for a while.
I got tired of having to remove and re-detect my USB controllers every week (or every day in some cases) so I started looking into a more permanent solution. For me, going into the device manager and rolling back the drivers for the USB devices (to the XP SP1 drivers as far as I can tell) has meant that I no longer have to delete the controllers and redetect them. I have not had any more instances of this problem since rolling the drivers back. I still get USB 2 performance out of my deivces, as is evident from my external HD performance alowing me to do a complete image of my 60GB drive (nearly full) in about 30 minutes.
