SP2 problem

When installing SP2, after completing all the recommended steps , my computer does not recognize either of my usb ports.  There are no driver updates available that I can find for my system, so I am stymied.  Any advice?

what you need to do is the following:

- go to control panel
- go to system
- click the hardware tab
- click device manager

in device manager you should see a device with a yellow question mark or exclamation point

if so then right click the yellow icon, and choose uninstall

now you should see no yellow warnings

now go to the "action" menu and click "scan for hardware changes"

if you dont see this for some reason, click on "universal serial bus controllers" then click the action menu, and scan for hardware changes.

the computer will then install new drivers for your usb ports (part of service pack 2), and you should be up and running.

please write back and let us know how this worked for you.

After reinstalling sp2 and following your instructions, windows still does not see my usb ports.  I had to go with your option #2 as ther were no yellow warnings in the device manager list.  Is there anything else I can do?  tks.

need more info firstly.  what system do you have?  prior to service pack 2 did you have service pack 1?  when is the last time your usb ports DID work?

2nd thing is, under usb controllers, if there are no yellow marks then your usb ports are initialized and should be working.  so what you should do is double click on the "universal serial bus  controllers' section, and right click and uninstall all of the entries in that list (under usb controllers).  then click the action menu and scan for hardware changes.  uninstalling all and reinstalling all drivers should fix it.

did what i suggest with uninstalling all entries and then scanning for new hardware work? or did you figure it out some other way?

I uninstalled all entries and then reinstalled after scanning for new hardware.

Thanks a lot, I had the same problem, my USB ports stopped working, and uninstalling and reinstalling the USB device drivers as you suggested worked!  Thanks, again!

I have a Dimension 8300 system and when I upgraded to SP2, the USB ports do not work:  I have tried all of the following which have not worked:
Updated the BIOS, updated the Chipset drivers, made sure plug-n-play was enabled, disconnected and reconnected devices, etc.
I have a USB printer and scanner.  Since the devices don't show up in Device Manager, I cannot update any drivers for them.  All devices worked properly before installing SP2.  It is simply the USB ports (all 6 of them) which don't work.  I tested them with a "jump drive" and it wasn't recognized.

I came upon the posting regarding uninstalling all devices under "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" and I'm not sure which entries to delete.  The expanded list under "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" includes four "Intel 82801EB USB Universal Host Controller" entries, one "Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller" entry and four "USB Root Hub" entries.  I have tried updating the drivers for all these entries, and Windows could not come up with a "better match".

Please help.  Thanks.

I uninstalled ALL the devices listed under USB controllers, the Host Controllers and the root hubs.  Then by using Action and Scan for Hardware changes, XP found each one and reinstalled it with new drivers, one at a time.  As one Host Controller got re-installed, the Root Hub appeared as well, so only 4 device installs occurred, and they were all back.  I know it sounds scary, but it worked!  No thanks to Microsoft.....  Good luck, let us know how it goes.  But I'm not the expert here, I just followed the original postings instructions, but it worked for me.

I have a notebook which was giving me occassional errors with my USB ports after I upgraded to XP SP2.  I would get a message that the device would perform better if connected to a USB 2.0 port,  but this system only has USB 2.0 ports (6 of them).  After doing some research on USB2 and XP SP2,  I used the XP "Driver Rollback" feature to roll my driver for my USB ports back one version.  Since doing this,  I haven't had a single case of that error popping-up.

if you rolled back your driver, then you are running pre service pack usb drivers which means you have just disabled usb 2 support on your system.  usb 2.0 support was introduced with service pack 1.  from what i gather, what youve done is rolled back to the previous driver which means the pre usb 2 support driver. its hard to say.  usually you get that message when you plug a usb 2 device into a usb 1 port.  essentially its telling you that your device is capable of transferring at a much faster speed, but your port (because its usb 1) is limiting its speed.

i guess the question to ask you is this:  are your usb 2 devices transferring at full speed (480 mbps)?  if so, then great, if not then you need to do as this posting suggests and uninstall all the usb listings and then scan for hardware changes and let windows reinstall the drivers automatically.

My devices perform at full speed most of the time.  When I am pushing the bus too hard (ie too much IO) I will get an error,  and it appears as though the sysem drops the whole bus back to USB 1.1 levels,  as I start getting the pop-ups that my devices would perform better if I plugged them into a USB 2 port.  When that happened,  I would go into the device manager and remove the USB controllers and let Windows re-detect them and it would work fin again for a while.

I got tired of having to remove and re-detect my USB controllers every week (or every day in some cases) so I started looking into a more permanent solution.  For me,  going into the device manager and rolling back the drivers for the USB devices (to the XP SP1 drivers as far as I can tell) has meant that I no longer have to delete the controllers and redetect them.  I have not had any more instances of this problem since rolling the drivers back.  I still get USB 2 performance out of my deivces,  as is evident from my external HD performance alowing me to do a complete image of my 60GB drive (nearly full) in about 30 minutes.
