SP2 upgrade done... internet not working :(

ever since i installed the SP2 last week my IE displays: page cannot be found... on top of that all other internet related applications are not working either. My wireless connection looks to be running properly and the driver is fine (at least it says its running fine) and my McAfee firewall is disabled and i ran several spyware checks. My PC was working just fine before i installed SP2.

Can someone please help me ??

Nickrulz,

I too found my applications like IE, MSN Messenger, and Outlook Express could not connect to the Internet after I installed SP2 last night, even though I turned off both Windows Firewall and my ZoneAlarm firewall.

Worse, when I used System Restore to back out of SP2, the restore was successful, but my applications still can't connect (ZoneAlarm is turned off). That was a surprise, and a disappointment. Interestingly, I can ping both my Linksys wireless router and www.yahoo.com, so it seems my wireless connection is okay, but can't use IE even to go to my router's web page. I know the router is connected to my Internet provider because the other PCs in the house can get to the Internet without a problem.

Anyhow, I'm hoping your Winsock suggestion fixes the problem, but am concerned about exactly what your instructions do. I don't want to make things worse. Can you elaborate a bit on why this will fix the problem? Thanks very much in advance.

Anyone else have any further suggestions?

Personnally i would unplug my modem and router completely power and all, let it set for about 10 minutes, that resets them. Plug back in might work did for me.

This Windows XP Service pack 2 is a big hassel, since microsoft developed it, I dont say its a problem but i would say its very good cos it has all the latest security feature....but i dont seems they are test..but do try to look out for updates on this issue at the Microsoft.

Well, I'm happy to report that my problem is resolved. The nature of my problem was a firewall problem, but it took quite a bit of sleuthing to track it down.

My problem came about because without realizing it, I had both Norton's firewall and Zone Alarm Firewall running on my PC. (Norton's firewall was pre-installed on my PC, which I didn't realize, so I later installed Zone Alarm firewall.) Interestingly, I did not have any problems with this dual-firewall set-up until I upgraded to SP2.

As I said in my earlier posting, immediately after the upgrade to SP2 I had Internet connectivity, but after the first reboot, there was no connectivity at all. I was baffled because the problem continued even after I turned off both Zone Alarm's and XP's firewalls. I knew it wasn't a network issue because I could ping both my router and www.yahoo.com. Additionally perplexing -- and this is what provided the final clue -- even after turning off these firewalls, the XP Security Center (Start/Control Panel/Security Center) showed that a firewall was ON though I had disabled both Zone Alarm's and XP's firewalls. It wasn't until a few minutes ago that a co-worker noticed that the text below the ON indication on the Security Center window said that Norton Internet Security was running. As I said, I had no idea I had Norton's firewall on my PC.

To fix the problem I uninstalled Norton. Disabling it didn't seem to do the trick, so I went for a full uninstall. After that -- voila -- I got connected to the Internet.

Two gribes about all of this:
1. Okay, I realize that running two firewalls might be asking for trouble, but still it's unfortunate that upgrading to SP2 caused this total blockage of connectivity without any indication of why. A nice error message or pop-up box from Norton would have been nice.

2. Doing a System Restore to pre-SP2 didn't fix the problem. That was disappointing. I guess whatever firewall related configuration that got messed up was not reinstated by the restore.

So, thanks to all of you who tried to help, good luck to all who are still facing this problem.

Nick,

XP Service Pack 2 offers two new commands for diagnosing and fixing LSP Winsock2 problems. They're described in this article under the section entitled "Winsock self-healing".

If "netsh winsock reset catalog" works, it's a lot less painful than what was needed before SP2!
