Spoke too soon!

After posting re the success of removing the battery below - a new problem!

Boot up - find web pages as normal..leave Dell for a short time...try to get any web page and get the DNS error - cannot connect.

Restart and problem has gone...only to return when I come back after leaving the machine for ten minutes ...

Any thoughts welcome...

Matt.

Scanned for malware lately? Try clearing the browser cache and deleting .tmp files from the hard drive...

Router or modem problem? Have you talked to your ISP?

Thanks Ron,

I have Zone Alarm, AVG and have cleaned the temp files, ran Widow Washer and AdAware...

I ran the XP Network Diagnostics and got some failures...

Default Outlook Express News   news.freeserve.com (I never use this so don't understand - I use IE - Freeserve is my Broadband supplier)

Network Adapters [00524291] WAN Miniport (IP)...expand this and get...DNS Server Search Order (Failed).

The fault is now intermittent - sometimes I connect first time - others I have to restart - if I stay on, example yesterday I left a jazz music site on for hours, I have no problems...I can access any site I choose...only if I come of the web and try to reconnect later.

Scanned for malware lately?

When you say "come off the web" does that mean you actually disconnect, or is there still an open network connection but you're just not using it because the browser is closed?

Could it be that your ISP is droppping you when there's no traffic? I'd check with them on that one. ;)

If the router or modem is connected via USB, open Device Manager and expand list under USB. Double-click on each root hub, one at a time, and go to Power Managment tab. Uncheck the box "allow PC to turn off this device..." Click ok back to Device Manager and repeat for all root hubs. Then reboot.

Ron,

I ran the Windows Malware check - nothing found.

'but you're just not using it because the browser is closed?'    Correct!

I followed your advice on the "allow PC to turn off this device" - still got the problem this morning.

I called the ISP and went through a few checks - was advised to change the filter on the Broadband line, which I have done...next time I get the problem I have to unplug the Alcatel modem at the Dell and at the phone line and retry using the Alcatel connection to try for an error report...and call them again.(India I think).

I also have tried CMD ipconfig/flush earlier today after I got a network diagnostics message...'This machine does not have any installed network adapters. The required network device drivers may not have been installed'.

So far, this afternoon, I have not had a repeat of the problem...I just BET I regret saying that!

I still have the installation kit for the Alcatel Broadband ...would deleting and re-installing be wise if I have further grief?

I do appreciate your help on this - hope it is not taking time from your weekend...

Maybe leave it alone unless/until you get another error message. Hopefully the new filter will solve the problem.

And if it doesn't, it might be reasonable to uninstall and reinstall the Alacatel software. No promises, no warranties, and no refunds. ;)

Ron,

Today it has not dropped the browser at all...fingers crossed.

Thanks again for your help...

Ron,

Since my last post, I have had the problems again...but yesterday I found an error 733 and followed the following instuctions...'To resolve this issue'...

Start - Settings - Network Dial UP Connections - Right click the connection you want to use to connect to the ISP - then click Properties.

Click the Networking tab

Click settings

Click to clear the Negotiate multi-link for single link connections check box.

Click OK

Click OK

I have had complete access to the 'net all day with no problems - before I did this, I had read that my ISP - Orange - were causing connection problems, so I cannot say if they have done a fix to something, or the above action has.

I thought to mention this in case it might help you to help some other user with the same problem...my thanks again...

Thanks for the update. Hope this fixes the problem and we're finally rid of you.

Ok, just kidding about being rid of you.. ;)

Useful info if anyone else has the same problem.
