Spyware Removal Advice

I am wondering if anyone has any advice on which one to use. I know that some of them are bad in the fact that they install spyware on your computer as they remove the other stuff. Any suggestions?

I installed ad aware from lavasoft to detect spyware. It was quick downloading and is very easy to use and is efficient.Wouldn't do without it.

I've used Ad-Aware, but I think that Spybot Search & Destroy is more thorough.  I've been using Spybot for over a year now and I've had no problems with spyware since.  This is a shareware program.

I use spybot and adaware and they both detect different stuff ,so use both.

They are both free.

make sure to run updates after you install spyware software. also make sure you are running the latest version and updates before each scan. also run www.pestscan.com after running spyware software scan, this scanner will show what they left behind.

Yeah, when I first asked the IT guy about doing that, he said they never reccommend doing it on Laptops (he said that he wouldn't even think twice about doing it on a desktop).

Just out of curiosity, how would one go about reformating a hard drive on an Inspiron 8000?

Thanks for the info. I did download the programs, but unfortunately I think I have many more problems with my operating system. The computer guy here at work is going to take a look at ot for me.

Thanks for the info though.

I have done many reformatting of laptop and desktops and there is absolutely nothing wrong in that.  It is not a real big problem with doing that.  well that is if you know what you are doing.  So tell the IT guy that he shouldn't give it a second thought and just do it.  It will be so much better in the long run. Now back to the topic at hand.  What is the best way to get rid of spyware?

I  have had to reformat my comp a few times now due to fiddling with the registry(well I mean how else are you going to learn) and what I have done now is I did a clean install updates etc defragged then with power quest drive image I copied an image of it to disc so I can do a clean install in minutes now and have it configured straight away. Its a handy bit of kit because you can back up from DOS so the OS isnt needed.

I have been asked to post a copy of my Malware post from the virus (information and removal) board to this board (which I do not normally read) and noticed this thread. If anyone here still has problemswith any malware this is my recommended order of removal. Any post in the virus (I&R) board will be looked at by me, and answered if regarding malware.
----------------------------------
Use these to remove Malware (Spyware and Adware).
Spybot S&D
Ad-Aware
Cwshredder
With all of these download them, install (after unzip if required), download the latest signature file, run, delete all that they find.

Failing those solving your problems a post of a hijackthis log for the experts to advise.
HijackThis From Here
Download, run, scan, save log, then in notepad copy the FULL log by copy and paste to a post in one of these specialist spyware removal forums:-
http://tomcoyote.org/forums/index.php
http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php
http://www.net-integration.net/cgi-bin/forum/ikonboard.cgi
http://boards.cexx.org/index.php
DO NOT FIX ANYTHING WITH HIJACKTHIS WITHOUT EXPERT ADVICE, most of what it finds you need for normal MS Windows tasks.
Do read the sites FAQ before posting, and advise your problem and what steps you have already done to try to cure your problem.

I am in all those sites as ChrisRLG. You might get me, but any of the more problematic ones are handled by the experts. If you get a 'advanced member' like me, we have other ways of asking for advice from the experts, to pass on to you.

You could post your log here in this thread (if in the Virus Information and Removal Board - if not post in that board not in this thread), and I will have a go at giving advice, but if you go to one of the more specalist forums more experts will be able to help.

OK.. I downloaded both adaware and Spybot SD, I ran Spybot, and up came a whole list of stuff.. some were checked.. some not.  Of course all had RED exclamation points in front of them and all *titles*(?) were printed in red.. Now I am not sure at all what to do.  Do I click on " Fix selected problems"??  Guess I am really GREEN at this.. No green entries.. only red *titles*.  Description on all is black..  Thanks for helping this green-horn..
