Start up Menu Notification Behavior
I was looking at my Start Up Menu, and I wanted to change the Notification Behavior of one item, they all seemed to be locked on what was showing at the time, either "always show" or "hide when inactive" I am the Administrator so I don't understand what would not allow me to change the Notification. Since it has been some time since I have looked at the Start Up Menu the problem could have existed for awhile.

No options show when I click the down arrow. I clicked restore defaults and it changed a couple to "hide when inactive."

You could try running SFC , which checks protected System Files for corruption & if found replaces them from reinstall..XP CD .
If it prompts for XP CD , hold Shift key while inserting XP CD to stop Auto play.
Use Start > Run & type
sfc /scannow (space after sfc)
----------------
If that doesn't work & you don't get a fix , you could try a Windows Repair from boot of XP CD.
!st set the BIOS to boot 1st from the CD-ROM by pressing F2 (some Computers use "Del") key.
With XP CD inserted re-start the Computer & start Install by pressing the "Enter" key , then press the next R when displayed to start a Windows Repair.
Don't press the 1st R displayed for the Recovery Console.
Repair leaves the Installed Programs & Data intact but you will have to download the Windows Updates again , including SP1a if the XP CD label doesn't show it.
Remember to Enable a Firewall like the XP Firewall before going on-line to protect against the Blaster Worm , Sasser viruses etc , until you can download the FREE Microsoft Patches for protection without Firewall.
