Start up problem after HD change XP Home

My Inspiron 6000 had a hard disk crash. I backed up the data on an external drive. Received a new drive from Dell and restored the data after partitioning the virgin drive.

On start up I get the Windows logo on the black screen which then changes a sky blue colour and everything halts, no BSOD or error messages, it just stays that way as if it's waiting for something. I've tried 'safe mode' and all the other variations offered when hitting F8, with the same result, it just stops, no errors shown.

I popped in the XP CD and booted from this hoping to repair the fault but I'm not offered that option, just a full re-install, which I don't want to do.

In an attempt to access files etc. I made a bootable CD from here http://www.answersthatwork.com/Downright_pages/Boot_Disks_and_Boot_CDs.htm

(Windows XP emergancy boot) Here's the odd thing. If I boot from this CD, the hard disk kicks in and presto! I have all my settings, programs, user accounts etc. back to where I was before the crash, fantastic! But I can't boot up with out the boot CD, every time I try without it the same thing happens, the start up process stops!?

Obviously there are some corrupt files causing this but I havn't a clue which and would appreciate input as of what to do to resolve this problem, thanks in advance.

I suggest you boot from the xp cd and press R when given the option to get into the restore console.

from there I would try using the fixboot and fixmbr commands.

You can perform a chkdsk /r on the system by booting thru the Xp CD. If in case you have already tried doing it , then repair reinstall can be done, i beleive there is no data loss in repair reinstall ( though not sure ).
