ARose,

In the event the technician who advised you to do this said that you needed 80% of your resources (or any other specific amount) to run the email program you can cheerfully ignore the advice. With the Windows XP architecture it is highly unlikely that startup programs are causing problems unless you have an inordinately high number of them and you have a minimal amount of RAM (128MB).

Msconfig Check
Start/Run/   and type in
msconfig
OK
Startup Tab

Keep the page open then go to link below.

This site will tell you what everything is and whether you should disable it or leave it running
Read the Key at foot of page, then click on "Here" at top. Use the Search box to check all your entries

To disable, just remove the check at the entry. Reboot

Note.
If you disable any spyware/malware, chances are it will return when you reboot.  So if you do find any such entries you will have to run a removal program/scan to delete it from your hard drive.

Elaborate on your Earthlink email problem. And what email software are you using (Outlook Express, Netscape, Internet Explorer...)?

I have Earthlink's Total Access 2005.  I am starting to believe my problem started last week when I tried to install my Calendar Creator Plus software program.  It will not work with Windows XP anyway.  It shows up in the Start > All Programs listing, but when I try to do an Add/Remove it doesn't show up in the list so I can't remove it.  Is there any other way I can remove it from my hard drive?  I probably will need to remove and reinstall the Earthlink Total Access program, too.  This whole mess is also causing a problem when I try to turn off the computer.  It won't shut down and I have to push the "off" button, which I know is not good.  I really need help here, and trying to get a human on the tech support line is impossible so I'm hoping someone here can direct me in a user friendly way.  Thank you all.

To remove the Calendar program

All Programs.  Hover your mouse over the entry and if a menu pops out, look for an uninstall option there.
If there isn`t one, open the folder that contains the program on the hard drive and look for an ".exe" starting with "unin" or similar. (look in all folders).  It won`t hurt to try something you think might be an uninstaller.  If it isn`t you can cancel whatever it turns out to be if it is wrong.

Try doing a System Restore to a date last week before you installed the calendar software.
Click start>help&support
Click "undo changes..."
Follow prompts and pick a date before you installed it.

And maybe the calendar software will run if compatibility mode is set to an earlier version of Windows.
