The Dongle is a USB protection key and the instructions says that you should not connect this USBkey into the computer anytime before you have installed the software properly. Have you done that, then I guess that's the problem?
Try using the restore CD?
If there is people out there who want to exchange information about the Cubase SL, please contact me. I am a rookie but fast learning, and of course a good musician!

thanks for this,
I sent the software back actually. However I have now purchased Cubase SE. I managed to install the sequencer part ok, but then, when I tried to install the virtual instruments, it hung at the point where it tried to install and gave a message like, updating the registry, this may take a few minutes. I have tried a few times but it keeps on hanging.

Hey Mark,
Ok, soo you sent it back for new version...
I have a big problem with my soundcard, Creative SB Audigy 2. I thougt that this card supported ASIO. But it seems like there is only the more expensive ones that support it. To bad.
I have recently restored my computer and at this time I am downloading some new files for the soundcard. I hope that it will work better.

Please let me know what happened, as I am experiencing the same problem on installation. It does not involve the DONGLE, as it freezes at a point in the CD installation process where you are not allowed to have the dongle in. There are other weird issues, begining with the first screen, where by clicking on "launch adobe acrobat" is the only way to start cubase, and if do get the application to run, it will affect my NVIDIA TwinView driver and it keeps running and not shut down. The shop that sold me cubase isn't eager to exchange it but will if there is a demonnstrated incompatibility issue. Steinberg is all but impossible to reach by phone.
I have a 5 month old inspiron 8500 with 516 ram, 2.2 pentium 4 and XP Pro.
