Why would you want to?

To Fudgieguys:
I didn't mean I would want to avoid installing XP Pro SP2, just that the CD I have is the original.

To JRosenfeld:
Thanks. Of course, I should have done the Advanced search.

If you do an advanced search, there are several threads discussing problems (and proper method) with install/reinstall of OS on Dimension 9200 (and/or 9100). You could also try the technical support link at the top of the page,

You can slipstream the SATA drivers into a new copy of XP or copy those needed drivers onto a thumb drive.  You are playing with fire by not having SP2, in my opinion.

Thanks. I never meant that I would purposely NOT use SP2. In fact, I have been working on the slipstreaming of SP2 into the original install files. The SP2 slipstreaming went fairly easily, but the adding of the drivers for the SATA controller has proven to be a real challenge, for me, at least. I think I have now been successful, and will post my solution for any other Dimension 9200 owners as soon as I am sure. Thanks all!

But how would the thumb drive option work? As with a floppy with the F6 option? How would the thumb drive emulate the A: drive in this scenario?

I would think the problem is more likely the Chipset drivers. Did you slipstream them, also?

I had the same problem. If you have a PCI Express Video Card then try removing it and putting in a regular PCI video card. I think it is a chipset problem with PCI Express cards. Let me know if that works for you guys.

My problem was that my Windows XP Pro CD did not have the drivers necessary for the SATA hard drive. And as my machine does not have a Floppy drive, I was unable to press F6 early in the install process, and provide the drivers that way. Ended up, I slipstreamed SP2 into the original XP Pro CD files, and also included the SATA drivers on the CD with a pointers to them in both the txtsetup.sif and winnt.sif files. I have meant to document the process, but have been busy.

As for the Intel chipset drivers, this did not cause the installation to fail. The Microsoft CD includes some generic drivers, I guess, and after the install, I downloaded and ran the Intel Chipset utility, and all was updated nicely.

When the machine first arrived, I had run the pre-programmed install routine with XP Home and made screen shots of the Device Manager devices. Comparing them after my own XP Pro install, I see that everything is peechy-keen.

Anyone in dire straits with the same problem, let me know, and I will try to explain more in detail. Found all of my source material in Minasi's books and on the web.

On a separate note, please be aware that the standard keyboard that ships with this system is cheap and sub-standard in my view. Shelling out 1200$ plus for a new system (without monitor) should get you a decent keyboard.
