stop error 0x0000008e

Windows will not start.  I am getting the following message:

STOP: 0x0000008E (0xC0000005, 0xBF839706, 0xF7E94668, 0x00000000)

win32k.sys - address BF839706 base at BF800000, datestamp 3f73195d

events leading up to this...

Last night the system was running slow and freezing up. I shut down windows.  I got a message that rundll32.exe was not responding.  I hit the "end task" button. Windows shutdown, I restarted.  Things still weren't right so I have repeated these steps over and over - each time getting the same error for rundll32.exe.  Internet explorer stopped working - though i still had broadband connection, because aol was working.  calling up the control panel was taking about a 90 second delay.

Finally i downloaded/installed the windows XP service pack from the microsoft site.  this required that i restart windows.  i shutdown windows, and now it won't come back.  (I am on another computer writing this.)

i have tried F2 setup to startup in "safe mode" and a long list of things scroll by until it pauses at windows\system32\drivers\agp440.sys.  then the screen goes blue and says:

STOP: c000021a {fatal system error} the windows logon process system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0x00000080 (0x00000000 0x00000000).  the system has been shut down.

Please help me!!!!

angelweaver,

See if this is any help. If not, perhaps a repair reinstall (instructions here) may work.

The problem may be due to hardware failure, in which case (from this site applies:

"This general indication of a hardware failure is often quite difficult to pin down. Follow usual hardware troubleshooting protocols, in particular: Roll-back any recent hardware or driver changes; ensure that RAM sticks are matched and undamaged; check for viruses or hard drive damage; run ChkDsk to identify file system problems; ensure that all connections are sound inside the computer and all cards well-seated. In tough cases you may need to consult a professional shop for hardware diagnosis and repair."

angelweaver,

NTFS Reader for DOS (available here) should permit you to do this. Note that a repair reinstall should not destroy any data. If it does not resolve the problem, a clean reinstall may be required and it will remove all the contents of the hard disk.

I am going to try the repair/reinstall but i would like to back up my data first.
since i can't get into windows i can't do it the "normal way".
is there a way for me to divert to DOS so i can get to a screen that will let me run old DOS copy commands?
Thanks.

I think a Repair Install is your next step and, as already mentioned, very seldoms affects data. If that doesn't fix your spiralling problem this MS page may be worth looking at.

i have run the repair install.
i no longer have the "fatal system error" on the blue screen.
now - i get a windows error that says:
"lsass.exe - system error.  when trying to update a password this return status indicates that the value provided as the current password is not correct."
the above error box displays for a few seconds and the computer shutsdown and restarts.
this happens in normal and safe mode.
any ideas what to do next?

Do you have Service Pack 1 and all subsequent Windows updates installed ?

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=316134

Do you have a firewall enabled ? If not do so and then do an online AV scan at housecall.com

I can't get back into WIndows, though.

Any ideas on how I can get past this error so that I can get into Windows so that I can access these fixes?

Thanks!

It appears like you may have a virus (Sasser) but I'm not sure. If it is Sasser then MS says this

http://www.microsoft.com/security/incident/sasser_printxp.mspx but I don't see how this can help you. To start, I

would disconnect from the Internet. Boot to the Recovery Console and run this command:

chkdsk /r

I think your best chance is to disable the agp440 file as Denny mentioned. Link below.

I'm getting a similar STOP message very often, but mine reads:

*** STOP: 0X0000008E (0XC0000005, 0X80520EA7, 0XF2827CAC, 0X00000000)

Any help would be greatly appreciated please!!

arnaudlissart,

It might have been better for you to start a new thread, as your problem may not be related to the one being discussed in this thread. Look at

in the left column, click on 8e, that will move the right hand frame to the relevant part. check the MSDN article and the other links provided.

The 0xc0000005 indicates memory access violation.

Could be faulty memory or a bad driver (or BIOS). You could try running the diagnostic for memory. Also check in event viewer to see whether any errors are reported at the time of such a crash; that might identify any driver that may have been the cause. If these crashes occurred after installing new hardware or after updating XP, check to see if there is an updated BIOS available.
