you could try uninstalling some or all of the antispyware programs that you installed, and try to determine if one or more of them is causing the problem, somehow..  (two of them could be conflicting with each other)

also, you could see if there are any regkeys in "startup" that supposedly run adware (or other malware) at startup, and remove those..

to do that, one way is to use regedit and go to:

hkey_local machine/software/microsoft/windows/current version/run

then, in the right pane, see if you can spot any regkeys there that cause adware (or other malware) to run at startup, and delete those regkeys if you do.. you should back up the regkeys before you delete them in case you need to restore them.. look in "help" if you need instructions for that..

also, click "start" (bottom-left of your computer screen), then "all programs", then go to "startup" and see if anything fishy is "starting" from there.. if so, rightclick on it, and delete it.. again, you could back that up first, if you want to.. :)

incidentally, i don't use ms antispyware.. it caused problems for me..

i do use spywareblaster..

i also had problems with "prevx" and a2p personal with a2p's guard running, but i think that was because of a conflict between those and another program that i use..

My Dell is just about 2 years old. I never got that message until I got DSL and added a lot of Spyware software. I get the blue screen at the end of shutdown sometimes. It doesn't happen every time I shut down. I have "googled" the five string of numbers and I did a microsoft search. Neither found the string. The machine shuts down and this blue screen message is on the monitor. At that point I turn off the monitor and everything starts right up the next time I boot. It doesn't seem to be anything major, just one of those annoying things you want to figure out.

what you are describing sounds like something that is common with the newer dells.. if you get a "stop" error with the "blue screen of death", just turn the computer off, and then reboot it.. if the error does not repeat itself after you reboot the computer, then i would not worry about it..

the error where it says "the registry was not free" occurs when you are logging off, and you would not even notice it except to look in the event log and to see it listed there, so the "stop" error with the "blue screen of death" was not "the registry was not free"..

i used to get a "stop" error with the "blue screen of death" occasionally, when my computer was new (it's a year old, now), but i don't seem to get those, anymore.. yea, i would have been happier if i did not get them, but at least i now know that they are common with the newer dells.. i don't know what causes it..

if you get the error again, make a note of the error code, if you want to, and you can try to look it up, which might be helpful in some cases, but not in others..

it is possible that you could get an error where there is a more serious problem, but if you can reboot the computer, and the error is not repeating, i would not worry about it..

I've never fiddled with the registry although I do have Norton's Go Back.  I did try shutting down Spy Sweeper before I shut down and it seemed to work. The last time I also shut down Win Patrol, too but I got the message that time. I've checked my processes running before shutdown but there are so many I can't figure them out.

there are easier ways to work with the items in "startup".. if you have "spybot", you can go to "tools", then "startup" (however it is worded), and it will show you what is starting there..

also, if you use jv16 powertools, it can show you what is in startup.. there are other programs too that do that..

here is a little program that is easy to use.. it will let you easily switch items back and forth..

Why should I be interested in startup when it only happens when I shut down. I always wanted to unload some of my startup items so it would boot faster. I checked them out through msconfig but I never knew what I had to leave for windows to work. Also I would want my virus protectors and firewall to load or I would forget to start them up. I could leave my machine on all the time but it is a loud Dimension 8250 and the hum can drive me nuts. Dell did change the fan when I first got it which worked all of two days so I gave up.

sometimes, after adware (or other malware) has been "removed", there can be a regkey left behind that is supposed to make the malware run at startup, so, when the computer tries to run the malware after the malware's file(s) has been removed, it can cause an error to be generated..

i am not saying that you have that problem..

i would try uninstalling win patrol, and then see if that stops the errors.. be sure to close win patrol's running process(s) before you uninstall it, if you do decide to uninstall it..

In the 60 plus processes that are running, how do I know which one(s) belong to Win Patrol? Is there an easy way to make a copy of the list or a printout? Some of them I can tell because of familarity like Norton which I've used for a long time. I hate to have to do a google search for all the ones I donit know. There use to be something in DOS where you could send things directly to the printer although you probably could'nt do it with a USB printer anyway. I still don't understand why it only happens at shutdown and the computer turns off and it doesn't happen all the time.

Your problem is not the same as mind. The error only occurred at shut down and my screen never froze. I suggest you get the error message - I took my digital camera and downloaded the picture and printed it out and typed the numbers into the G00gle search bar. I came pretty close to an answer but it really went away when Spysweeper was upgraded.

Good luch!
