STOP:c000021a {fatal system error} The windows logon process...

Hi,

This has never happend before, and any help would be appreciated. Everything was working fine until I booted my Dell Dimension 8200 2 days ago. It boots fine, but on the logon screen, I try to logon, it displays the "Loading your personnal settings". Then, the "blue screen of death" comes on displaying this:

STOP:c000021a {fatal system error} The windows logon process was terminated or killed unexpectedly with a status of 0X000000 0X000080 (00x0000000)  The system has been shutdown.

(Or something along those numbers... there was 3 sequences, 2 were the same, and the other was the same except with an "80" stuck somewhere in there.) So I install Recovery Console. Nothing. (Stupid Invalid passowrd thing and the patches that were supposed to fix it didn't... So I Re-install XP. (By the way, I have Home Edition.)

So I copy my documents into a new User, I logon OK, I reboot. Today, I logon, and it does the same thing, but no screen. It flashes on for 1/2 a second then re-boots.

Thanks in advance for any help, I would greatly appreciate it.

Firewing1,

You indicate that after reinstalling XP you copied your documents into a new user. That suggests that you did not do a clean install of Windows XP including deleting the C:\ partition, recreating it, then formatting it prior to continuing the installation of Windows. If that is the case the cause of the initial problem has not been removed.

If you didn't do a clean install the instructions for doing so are here.

Acutally, I installed it OK, and re-made my acount. I loged-on OK, but the 2nd time it didnt work. For re-making it the 2nd time, I only took the "My Documents", "Favourites" and "Start Menu" Folders and imported them. This worked, so I also now know that the bug/virus/error is in the User data files (that are hidden, but I have it set to view all files....) Now, I know how to fix it, I just wanted to know if there is a way to prevent it. It REALLY took up time, effort and it was above all VERY annoying.

For others with this problem, try this. It worked for me. (This is intended for XP Home, but it will probably work for XP Pro.)

0) ***!!!BACKUP ALL DATA BEFORE DOING THIS PROCESS > I WARN YOU NOW THAT IF SOMETHING GOES WRONG > YOU COULD LOSE ALL YOUR DATA.!!!*** Use this at your own risk, it isnt touching any system files, but all your documents... so...

1) Reboot, and as your computer starts, but the F8 key about 3 times a second. You will find yourself at a Advanced Booting Options screen.

2) Use the arrow keys to select Safe Mode. Press enter to make your choise.

3) Once logged-on, click Start, Control Panel, User Settings.

4) Create a New acount.

5) Open "My Documents" and copy all the folders named "Favourites, My Documents and Start Menu" (If you'd like "Cookies", but I wouldn't suggest it) from the C:\Documents and Settings\[Old account name]\ to C:\Documents and Settings\[New account name]\ folder. Overwrite everything.

6) Logon to your New acount, All should work, with documents restored. **Soory, but the icons in Quick Launch and all settings will be lost. Please check these and reset them after.**

7) If all went well, then delete your old account. If all didn't, Sorry. Just trying to help.
