Sun Java

I play online games (Yahoo Spades, Pool) which of course uses java applets.  After finishing and closing the window it still stays open in my status bar.  I can't open it again, right click and close it.  I have to sign off Windows and sign back on to get it to close.  When trying to open another browser I have to go down to the staus bar, right click and close, which still does not close it on my staus bar, but allows the new window to be opened.  I am running WindowsXP Home Edition on a Dell Dimesion 8300 with 1 meg of memory.  I am not familiar with Sun Java or any java for that matter.....and I feel that it is a software problem.  Any help would be appreciated.

you can download ms virtual machine from here http://www.wildtangent.com/install/jvm/msjavx86_3805.exe . if you install ms virtual machine, then go to "add/remove", and in the left column, click "set program access", and then make ms virtual machine your default java.. after you install ms virtual machine, you should go to windows updates to get the security update for it.. then i guess you could uninstall sun java.. also, you could complain to sun about the trouble they are causing by restricting the availability of ms virtual machine, which, unlike their java program, works properly with the many websites that use java technology. i hope that sometime within the next few years there will be a solution for the currect dilemma.

Thanks for your reply.  I tried what you suggested with the exception of uninstalling Sun Java.  I am not sure what to uninstall.  Inside the Add/Remove menu there is a program called Java 2 Runtime Environment that I was prompted to download a while back to play a game.  Other than that,  there is a Java Plugin in the Control Panel itself that looks like Sun Java (little coffee cup).  After going to the Set Programs/Defaults and selecting ms virtual machine and clicking ok.....it defaults back to "use my current virtual machine for Java".  I have tried setting the defaut to Microsoft systems which defaluts to ms virtual machine and tried to set it under "custom" also, and it still defaults back to "use my current virtual machine".  I have tried re starting the computer and everything I know to do besides unistalling the Java Plugin.  Should I uninstall this and try again?  I just get really freaked out when I start uninstalling things...lol.  Please let me know what you think.

I wonder why this Sun Time Java came on my new machine?  Is this something that Dell promotes?  I will wait for your reply.  Thanks

you don't need to worry about the settings in "set program access" reverting back to "use current program".. mine does the same thing.. and you don't have to worry about uninstalling sun's java.. have you tried going back to the games to see how things work, now that you have installed ms virtual machine?

I ended up leaving the Sun Java on my computer, but found a way to disable it on the control panel through a menu plug in.  I actually spent an evening going through the Sun Java web site and did learn some important information, including a section that they have specifically on Yahoo Games.  The site says that they actually have a fix for the problems with Sun Java and Yahoo Games, but after doing exactly as they suggested......I still had the problem of closing the java applet windows from the game rooms.  After I disabled the Sun Java and started using the ms virtual machine, I have had no problems.  I do want to say this about the Sun Java though.......compared to msvm the graphics are superb.  With Sun Java the graphics are larger...sharper and just more real.  I hate that I can't make it work, but will keep an eye on the website for updates.  Things are running smooth and well...I just miss the nice graphics..lol.  Thanks for all of your help.  I am glad that I found this forum for future use....there is lots of answers to common questions that I have been a great benefit.  I hope that this information will be helpful to someone in the future also.
