Did you open Task Manager (using Ctrl-Alt-Del keys) & check the CPU load?
If prolonged at 100% then read this MS KB article 916089

Go to device manager -> Automatic updates or security center / automatic updates and disable automatic updates. (can also be done in safe mode.
Reboot computer. Go to windows update and install the updates manually. Reboot computer.
Turn back on automatic updates afterwards if you prefer that option.
