svchost.exe application error

I have an Inspiron 9300 with Windows XP Home Edition, SP3. I am getting a dialog box with svchost.exe application error with the following message. The instruction at "0x00cb96bc" referenced memory at "0x00000000" . The memory could not be written.

In addition, another error message in the bottom right hand corner has appeared. It is a yellow exclamation point with File Change Detected in the headline. Below that is About This File Change: SystemGuard: Windows Host File Program: HP Digital Imaging Monitor (CUE) Location: C:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging\bin\hpqtra08.exe.

What a mess. Thanks for anyone's help.

cessnaflygirl,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

Try these steps to resolve the svhost.exe error. I found this information searching on google.com.

1.Go 2 the start menu
2.Right click "my computer"
3.Click "properties" then the "automatic updates"
tab
4.Choose "turn off automatic updates"
5.Reboot your computer
6.Go back to start menu and in all programs go to "windows update" you have to be connected to the internet.
7.Manually update windows.
8.Turn your automatic updates back on.

The recommended fix, if the problem reappears, is to turn off automatic updates, and just manually go to Windows Update periodically and update your machine.

For the other error message you are getting in the corner of the desktop you can try to uninstall all the printer drivers and the printer software, reboot and then re-install the printer.
