While Outlook 2002 (A.K.A. Outlook XP) is supported by the new Windows Mobile Device Center, WMDC seems to be not ready for prime time. A large number of people are having problems just getting their devices to connect with it.

For example, here's a short summary of my experience with WMDC and my Treo 700W (Windows Mobile 5.0):

1. To get the device to connect to Windows Media Player, switched from RNDIS USB to Serial USB. But, after disconnecting, reboot the PC. It won't connect a second time.
2. WMDC never pops up. Ever
3. The first time I connect the Treo after a PC reboot, I can start WMDC manually and see the "Connecting" message forever. While this is happening, start Task Manager and watch wmdc.exe continually cycle through endless "grab lots of memory and release it".
4. Reinstalled WMDC several times, both with the Treo already connected and not. No difference.
5. Disconnected my internet connection and totally disabled McAfee. No difference.
6. Disabled all startups and non-Microsoft services and rebooted. No difference.

In short, I'm waiting for WMDC SP1. The current version is way too fragile for  V1.0, even for Microsoft.

dbirk,

did you every get this to work... I just got a Treo 700wx and am having the exact same problem... as far as I can see there is no fix yet... did you find one or a work around of some sort (short of restarting the computer before every sync)

I have the same problem except WMDC 6.1 eventually tells me it was unable to connect.  Before that I couldn't even get the system to recognize my Treo 700Wx.  I actually had to reinstall the OS to get that far.

Seems to me that some of the Vista stuff was rushed just a bit.

Hopefully someone will come up with an answer.  In the mean time, I'm gonna keep trying whatever I can think of.

1705E using WMDC 6.1 recognizes Treo 700 WX but will not synch with Outlook 2007. Have worked with Palm tech, who, after several hours, concluded problem is with Windows Vista or Dell. Persistent error code is 0x85010014 (activesynch encountered a problem on the desktop). I desperately would like to synch calendar, contacts, and tasks. Windows Media connects fine and, alas, I could care less and do not want to use it. Can someone please help?

All,

My Treo 700W now works with WMDC and Outlook 2007. The problem turned out to be firewall settings in McAfee:

  • Open McAfee Security Center
  • Click on "Internet & Network", then click "Configure" below "To change your options, click Configure below"
  • Expand "Firewall protection is enabled" and click Advanced
  • On the left hand side, click on Program Permissions
  • Click "Add Allowed Program"
  • Navigate to c:\Windows\WindowsMobile and select WmdHost.exe
  • Click "Add Allowed Program"
  • Navigate to c:\Windows\WindowsMobile and select wmdcBase.exe
  • Click System Services on the left hand side
  • Click Add
  • Type WMDC for Program name (this isn't important, just a name)
  • Type 990, 999, 5678, 5721, 26675 for Inbound TCP/IP ports
  • Type 990 for Outbound TCP/IP ports
  • Type 5679 for Outbound UDP ports
  • Click OK and Ok again
  • Close McAfee Security Center

I'd suggest a reboot just for grins at this point.

For you that run another firewall, you can use the information above to know what programs need permissions granted to them and the ports to open.

Oh, and one more thing... I ran into a problem with Windows Update that caused some WMDC drivers to not install. If you have a similar problem, you'll probably see some "unknown driver" entries in Device Manager. If this happens to you, uninstall the unknown driver entries while your phone isn't connected to USB, then connect it and let Windows Update do the search. Once the search fails, select the option allowing you to pick the location of the drivers. Browse starting at c:\windows and, tada, the drivers are found and installed.

Hope this helps!

Doug
