system battery voltage is low

When I turned on my computer this morning (Windows xp), I got this message on black screen.  It said to strike F1 and when I did, everything was fine.  What does this mean?  Thank you!

tichetown,

If you have a desktop system it is an indication that the CMOS battery may be failing. Instructions for replacing it are in your user's guide.

I'll have to go hunt down my manual, but what would cause this?  Do you know if it would be under Dell's waranty?  It sounds expensive and we've had the computer less than 2 years.

tichetown,

CMOS batteries normally have a life span of from three to five years, but like all batteries, some don't last that long. The battery is covered under your warranty (it's about a $3 item from Radio Shack if you don't want to get it from Dell).

If you have difficulty locating your manual, go to the Reference tab above this forum and go to User's Guides|System and follow the links to your model. There will be an illustration there showing the location of the battery and how to replace it.
