System Failure after Feb07 Windows Updates
After installing Windows Updates on 2/16/07, I received the blue screen of death after the restart, with the following error code:
STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF78BE524, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)
I had installed the following updates:
- Windows XP: Alps - Other Hardware - Alps Pointing-device Succeeded
- Windows XP: VIA - Storage - Primary IDE Channel Succeeded
- Windows XP: Root Certificates Update Succeeded
- Windows XP: Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0: x86 (KB928416) Succeeded
- Visual Studio 2005: Visual Studio 2005 Service Pack 1 Succeeded
In order to get Windows to boot again, I had to choose to boot up the last known working version of Windows from the start up options. After checking Windows Updates again, I noticed that 2 of the updates were available again; leading me to believe that one of these caused the problem.
- New Listing February 2007 CardSpace Update for Windows XP (KB925720)
- Old Listing Alps - Other Hardware - Alps Pointing-device
- Old Listing VIA - Storage - Primary IDE Channel
Has anyone experienced a similar problem with any of these updates, or do you happen to know what might have occurred?
Thanks.
-Adam

It looks like the Microsoft Update forums are going crazy over this. I read one post stating the Dell is now saying to not install any Windows updates until they can resolve the problem. (Dell tech support fried some of their own laptops testing this out).

Does anyone know if Microsoft ever admitted to what went wrong with this? (Yes, I know it’s unlikely, but one can foolishly hope.) I too installed this optional hardware update from the MS Update web site, and I was very glad I had Windows Restore on so I could reboot to the last known good configuration when Windows completely failed to boot normally after installing it. (It happened to me on two different computers, a Dimension 4550 and an Optiplex that I don’t have the model number of with me but of a comparable age. I thought the first one was a fluke, which is why I tried installing it on the second one.)
By the way, one of the reasons some of us install such updates is that with the various layers of hardware and software, we may not know who wrote what, so it doesn’t seem to be unreasonable to trust that MS Update will accurately figure out which updates are appropriate. Next time I will double check. Sigh….
