Yes I am having the same problems on my Optiplex 270/620/745. I had to system restore 9 out of 10 computers. I am thinking it has something to do with the VIA - Storage - Primary IDE Channel update. But my 745 does not have anything hooked up to the IDE Channel. In fact there are no IDE ports on the board..

I also noticed that the "Alps Pointing-device" driver update caused my scroll wheel to stop working. I think that this driver is for a laptop built-in pad/mouse/pointing device, because I noticed an icon for a pointing device in my system tray. I had to rollback to the mouse driver to back to the Windows standard driver.
I usually like to install all available updates, if only just to test and see if they are problematic, but it almost seems as if inappropriate updates were offered for my machine. Very odd.
It looks like the Microsoft Update forums are going crazy over this. I read one post stating the Dell is now saying to not install any Windows updates until they can resolve the problem. (Dell tech support fried some of their own laptops testing this out).
CardSpace update failed on my 8400 with XPpro SP2. When I went to the update site to get it manually, it showed as being required, but when I selected it, it said 0KB, 0 min for the download. My system still seems to work, and it's not clear if that update ever got installed.
Does anyone know if Microsoft ever admitted to what went wrong with this? (Yes, I know it’s unlikely, but one can foolishly hope.) I too installed this optional hardware update from the MS Update web site, and I was very glad I had Windows Restore on so I could reboot to the last known good configuration when Windows completely failed to boot normally after installing it. (It happened to me on two different computers, a Dimension 4550 and an Optiplex that I don’t have the model number of with me but of a comparable age. I thought the first one was a fluke, which is why I tried installing it on the second one.)
By the way, one of the reasons some of us install such updates is that with the various layers of hardware and software, we may not know who wrote what, so it doesn’t seem to be unreasonable to trust that MS Update will accurately figure out which updates are appropriate. Next time I will double check. Sigh….
I have not heard any admission of guilt from Microsoft. I did notice that after that the Monday after this occurred, the updates were no longer available on Windows Updates. They may have some mention of it in a knowledge base article, but it looks like the situation was pretty much glossed over by the media and other companies (like Dell).
