Maybe Ishould have been more specific. The rest of the message is 'Acces is denied to Windows Management Instrumentation server on this computer. Have an administrator change your access permissions.'

I'm logged in as an administrator. I'm not sure where to go from here.

Windows XP/Home SP1

Is your version of XP an upgrade from another OS, a clean install, or came installed on your computer ?

From Start|Run, enter this command:

services.msc

Right-click on Event Log/Select "Properties". Set the "Startup Type" dropdown bar to "Automatic" Click "Apply". Then click "OK".

Do the same process for these 2 services: Windows Instrumentation Service and Remote Procedure Call(RPC).

Close Services. Close all programs and restart computer. Try System Information. If it works set the Service "Security Center" to Automatic same as you did for the others. Post back.

XP1 came with the PC. I bought it last Dec.

A month ago I applied the SP2 update and the system ran very slow after that. Really slow, so I uninstalled SP2.

It seems that my problem started after that.

I looked at the suggestions that you had and the services all are set to start automatically.

I even added a test user with administrator rights and then logged in as that user. I get the same message. Somewhere, something is set or not set related to access rights and that is probably causing my problem. Trick is to figure out where.

Thanks - Jim

First off run this command from Start|Run and verify that all the services that are set to
Automatic are actually running:

net start

On this link scroll (CTL+F) to msinfo32 for a possible answer to your exact error message. No guarantees that will fix it.

If you can't get it running send me an instant message with your email address and I'll send you a batch file which seems to bypass the reistry and actually loads the System Information. I too have struggled with msinfo32 for almost a year but my cure I believe is different from your's.
