fallsinn,

If you are using XP Home boot to Safe Mode (in XP Professional this can be done in Normal Mode).

At the Welcome screen press Ctrl-Alt-Delete twice. On the login screen enter Administrator as the user name and leave the password blank (it should be blank by default). If you are able to log on as System Administrator you can go to Start|Control Panel|User Accounts and correct your access problem by removing or resetting the password for your account or creating a new administrator account.

This is a bios-level password ... as you've no-doubt noticed, it will not let you power on the system until the correct password is entered.  it's primarily used to deter theft.  as such, if you do not know the password, there is no way for you to bypass it or for us to help you.  contact dell technical support and tell them that you have forgotten your bios, power-on, password -- they will be able to give you a master password (specific to your machine) that will let you get past that screen.  you will have to prove ownership to dell for them to give you this password.  if you cannot prove ownership to dell, you are completely out of luck.

In the future, try not to forget this password if you decide to enable it ;p

are you talking about the bios password screen that comes up as soon as the computer is turned on?
if so, post your dell make and model and we'll offer further advice.

OK, they gave me the bios password, it brought me out of the white screen to the opening of windows!  Where you need a user password to open?  Any suggestions on how to open this.  The lady at the help desk said she would just have to have the laptop sent in to repair?

I got very little help from Dell, they sent me from help desk to tech., to customer help ALL day, til finally one lady helped.  I also could hardly understand her, as I am sure she could me!

Any suggestions before I return to Del

follow the suggestions posted by the other users above -- this isn't really my area, but I know there are ways to defeat the windows password even if you've forgotten it.

others know, I don't ...  all I can say is to try google ... a windows password should be easy to bypass with physical access to the machine

You have to call dell support and prove ownership.  Bios passwords are there for a reason.

Bios passwords are not cleared when cmos battery is cleared.

There are no bypass of Bios password.

ONLY DELL SUPPORT can unlock a locked machine.

Putting a new blank hard drive in the machine will lock that drive as well.
