System Restore doesn't work

I have an Inspiron 8200. My System Restore funciton has not worked since I installed a new harddrive earlier this year. My computer uses WindowsXP OS. Please tell me how to restore this function.

rdturner,

Is it currently enabled. Go to Start|Control Panel|System|System Restore tab and see if it is checked for the hard drive. If it is and restore points are not being saved, uncheck it and reboot. Go back and enable System Restore again. Creat a manual restore point and try to restore to it, to verify that it is working.

My system restore doesn't work, it is enabled. When I try to restore to the earliest restore point the computer has the computer tells me it was unable to do it. I'm on an Inspiron 1100, Windows XP Home Edition. Any ideas on how to restore? Ideally I'd like to restore back to all the originals, but I'll take what I can get.

My Norton Antivirus hasn't been working for about a month, I'm not sure why b/c I haven't changed any of the computer settings or messed with it at all. But the computer says it is missing a file.

Follow the direction in the second post.  You need to disable it, reboot, re-enable it, set a restore point and then attempt to do a restore.  You need to visit Symantec(Norton)  customer support website to get support for Norton AV.  I would not go much further without having that working, its a necessity for safety reasons.  Kip

The System Restore is enabled. In fact, there are various System Restore Points listed as options, but when I go to any of them or try to create my own restore point, I still get the error indicating it cannot restore. When I watch the progrss bar, it starts to restore with normal progress but about midway through it just rushes to the end and won't restore. Any other options?

Im assuming that you indeed did turn it off, then turn it on again, since you didnt mention if you followed the directions given.

If you did follow the directions and its still not working, then the other possibiltiy is that you have some serious problems with your PC.  SR points will not be saved properly if you have other problems with your PC.  So you need to investigate whats going on and fix them before it will work.  You can start by looking at your event viewer and doing some research on what is occuring there.  You can do that by following these directions:

Go to your Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Event Viewer Check under the System Tab for any listed error messages. If any are found, repost them in a new thread or go to http://www.google.com and input the error message in the search box to see if solution may be listed. Kip
