First question: What version of XP are you running?
Second question: Do you have the CD for that version?
If your current version of XP is SP2, and you have an XP SP2 CD, then you can do the following:
Insert the SP2 CD. Close the Install Window if CD autoruns. Now, click on Start|Run.
Type rundll32.exe advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection C:\Windows\Inf\sr.inf. Press Enter.
WARNING! Do not replace current files with older versions. Doing so will destroy System Restore points.
A slightly safer method (no typing) of accomplishing the same thing would be to navigate to the C:\Windows\Inf subdirectory, right click on sr.inf and then left click on Install. Current XP version CD is still required and same warning as above applies.
Safest method would be to try the following:
Click Start|Run. Type sfc /purgecache. Press Enter.
Then click Start|Run. Type sfc /scannow. Press Enter.
This will check your system files and replace those that are incorrect. Same warnings apply here also.
Yikes! I am so far from being computer savy it is scarey. Just read your message and my head is spinning. lol
I have XP Home Editon. Yes, I have the cd for it. I think the SP2 was a download after I got this computer. Not sure about that would have to look. I know I downed something for that awhile back.
While waiting for a reply started reading other people's situations etc. Found one very similar to mine. It was the 2006 Norton. Had a feeling it was that but wasn't looking in the right place. Did as the message said .. disabled it .. restored to the day after I had installed it :) and then enabled it again.
Everything seems to be fine now. Will print out your message though. It very well could help me in the future unless you think I should still do what you had written. Thanks so much Tony .. appreciate it very much.
oops ... sorry Bert should have thanked you directly. That is a wonderful site you have there. Without it would not have gotten the system restore fixed. Thanks for all the work you put into that. It really helps people like me! And it was easy to follow :) It's now in my favorites!
Mouse is still not working great though. Driving me nuts. Have to click a whole bunch of times for it to work sometimes .. other times it goes right through.

Do you think I should down one of these? Or should I just bite the bullet and get a new mouse?
Thanks, you are very welcome!
Yes, updating the software is a good idea. I would use this page to select the correct driver for the mouse in question.
http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/downloads/default.mspx
If you have another mouse available, you may want to hook it up to rule out a defective mouse.

It's a microsoft wheel optical mouse. A friend told me that sometimes updating the driver for it could help. Found this http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/mouseandkeyboard/DownloadResult.aspx?prod=m_wmo10&os=xp&lang=en&driverVersion=IntelliPoint%205.2
Do you think I should down one of these? Or should I just bite the bullet and get a new mouse?
