Try this first. If this does not work, then proceed to below.

 

If you have the Operating System disk, I would consider what is called an Operating System Repair. If you do not have the disk and live in the United States and are the origional owner of the computer, then click below my signature and request a disk.

 

I always stress to people to make copies of files and folders that you cannot afford to lose. This should be a normal practice.

 

Insert the Operating System Disk and restart your computer.

 

Press any key to boot from CD

 

Choose install.

 

Do the agreement.

 

Now choose repair. Leave the disk in until you see the Welcome Screen. Takes about 35 minutes. Now you'll need to get all the Windows Updates again(more painful)

 

Everything should work, again. Stay away from Registry programs. They tend to mess everything up.
