Assuming that you got the patch that mico soft had for system restore..It take 2 to 5 mins of idiol time for system restore to create a restore point..So if there are any programs using up your idiol time then it will not create one.. Do you have Zone alarm this is a great one for doing this..If you do shut it down for 2 to 5 mins and see if it creates a restore point..As far as setting it to make a restore point at a proposed time I don't think that is posible.. But if it is I would be interrest in that... I hope this helps

My mind works like lightning one Brilliant flash and its gone!!!

Yeah, thanks Wolfin13.  I have ZA and ETrust AV, so I guess there's always something going on.  I guess if I have to stop these apps to force a restore point, I might as well just go create one myself manually. :)  I didn't know if there was something I missed regarding this, but it would be nice to be able to set up a calendar of restore pionts at my descretion...but then again, that might make too much sense to MS.  :)

Thanks anyway.

Hey no problem ..I recently upgraded to zone alarm 3.1 it started makin restore points now and then but some times nothing for a long time.. So I just shut down my running programs and let it set for 2 to 5 mins and it creates one..Yeah I agree that would be nice if you could just set a time and day and have it create one ,but like you said MS don't want to make it to easy on you..LOL

My System Restore has been an "of again on again affair." This is what I have discovered. I use ZA Pro for my firewall. After I updated to the newest version I noticed that no new automatic checkpoints were being created for System Restore. I strongly suspected that no System Restore points were being created due to ZA Pro. So I did some experimenting. I found that when I disabled ZA Pro and my cable modem the restore points were automatically made. However, through further experimenting I have found that by opening ZA Pro and going to Program Control>Automatic Lock>Custom and checking Lock after 20 minutes of Activity then back to Automatic Lock and ticking the ON, I now have these automatic restore points created again. I also do not use a screen saver. Perhaps this will work for others.

I wonder if regular ZA is doing the same thing?  Did you find anything at the ZA site to shed some light on this?  I've got a cable modem, router, and ZA (regular) also, but really never gave it a thought. I figured the PC wasn't on enough at specific times to create a backup, but this has me thinking now.

iimtnc., No I never found any reference to this on the Zone Alrm Site, just discovered this on my own. All I can say is that this procedure with these settings works for me. You could try the same settings and let us know if this works for you.

I have already posted a message on this topic a week ago.  Got one feedback, but it was not relevent as my system is up-to-date in terms of windows updates.

As suggested in you reply to Jimtnc, I have disabled Zone Alarm, shut off my internet access and exited all programs and waited a good 40 minutes.  The system has not created automatically a restore point.

I manually entered the Restore utility (accessories>systems tools>restore), I asked the system to create a restore check point.  The system prompted it is not able to do so and suggested to restart the computer.  For sure, it did not work out either after rebooting.

The last check point created automatically by the system was 6 months ago, and then nothing...

Any idea?

Thanks creeper, that info is good to know.  Unless I spend countless hours at MS reading all these knowledge base articles I have to rely on good people like you to "pass it on".  :)    Thanks.

Jim.

Ok, I tried the suggestions and had some good results. I didn't find wininit.ini on my harddrive. But I did shut down ZA, did a manual restore point create and it worked (it showed up to the right of the calendar). However, I still couldn't get the auto create to work. I'll try some more over the weekend.

Update:  Still didn't get the system to create an auto restore point. I exited ZA, closed all the background apps, and waited 30 minutes...to no avail. I didn't disconnect my online feed, but didn't think it would matter.

I did find out that if you create one manually, and click "Back", it will wipe out the newly created restore point. So if you create one manually, click Home instead...then come back to check the calendar/point list by selecting "restore my computer"... then cancel out.

To anyone that's remotely interested:

Update2:  I was told that I have to have Statemgr and PChealth enabled in startup to successfully have "system restore" function properly. Haven't seen that written up anywhere before, but I enabled them anyway. Haven't been able to successfully get an auto restore though. The rest of my family keeps getting in the way...selecting another screen saver, loading up the temp files, never giving the system enough time to rest....aaarrrgggghhhh!!!

But, I'm still working on it.  :)

Creeper,

Thanks for the info.  As suggested by Microsoft in article Q274092, I performed a search in my system : there is no file or folder named wininit.ini.  I asked for a wildcard search (i.e. wininit.*) and I got 6 files, all resident in C:\WINDOWS, one of them is wininit.bak, all other 5 have no extension.  The Microsoft proposed fix is therefore not good for me.

As suggested by jimtnc on Jan 24, I checked my startup selection, and both pchealth and statemgr are enabled.  What else should I verify?  I am still unable to create a restore point.

Suggestions?

What other background programs can cause system restore to stop automatic setting points.  Seems like mine stoped when I installed Norton System Works 2003.  Any ideas would be appreicated.

I've been using zone alarm for sometime now starting with version 3 Pro and now am running the most recent version. Sometime ago there was an issue with ZA interfering with system restore however that was fixed by an update. Are you routinely updating ZA?
