system restore unsuccessful

I have an inspiron 1501 with vista, and until lately have run system restore successfully. Now each time i have run it, it has been unsuccessful due to an unspecified error. I have heard that it may work in safe mode. What is it ?

Safe mode is a verson of the windows opertating system that loads basic functions and driver. The restor function preceeds this operation. so it is not possible to do this. If you are not able to use the factory restore function then you will have to go with a full reinstall using the recovery disks.

Some file may have been corrupted and isn't able to restore properly.  Or you may have a virus.  If the computer is working fine then you can clear out System Restore and start anew.  If you are getting endless popups and a general degradation of usefullness on the computer then a virus is most likely present and has taken over the computer and the ability to use system restore.  Then as Dave said, Factory Image Reinstall would be your best option.

Lisa, why are you trying to use System Restore? If you suspect a malware problem, please describe the symptoms and steps you have taken to clean it. A scanner that goes into System Restore to "clean" can corrupt System Restore so it cannot be used. Please provide more information. Thanks.

Hello,

i was using it to restore the hibernation hot keys Fn + F1 which suddenly stopped working. I managed to restore this function manually with help from the forum. However the system restore still does not work. I have used it on one other occaision when it worked perfectly

Both problems seemed to have occured when i installed a game and then uninstalled it. It took over 2 hrs to uninstall

In that case, I agree with the above in saying that your best option if you are not able to use either System Restore or the Dell factory restore function, is to do a full reinstall using the recovery disks.

Start/Accesories/System Tools/System Restore.  When it opens, "create a restore point" when that opens remove the check by drive C and D.  Windows will ask if you want to turn SR off, accept and exit.  All restore points will now be gone.  Then reopen it and repeat, except this time check drive C and name the restore point whatever you want and there you go.  Bob's your uncle.  Starting fresh with a new restore point.
