System Restore

I am using Windows XP home edition. System Restore is not saving my restore points after they are created. This problem started a few weeks ago. I have tried many things but none so far are fixing the problem. I don't use it as a back-up, but whenever I load a new program its nice to create a restore point. If I remember correctly this started the first part of January 2004.

I need help and Microsoft web site doesn't tell me how to fix, only how to use. I used it all last year and never had any problems.

All respones will be considerated and welcome.

Thanks

For my own information. How do you know when your restore points are not being saved.

Thanks for the info.

As to Microsoft Knowledge base for System Restore there answers ( turned off restore, re-loaded windows,no disk space) none of which apply to me. I wish it was that easy.

Thanks anyway.....

Make sure SR is set to Automatic and loading in msconfig/Services. Run System File Checker. If a and b don't help re-install SR by right-clicking sr.inf and select Install.

Hi Sherr...........When I try to restore to an earlier time there aren't any restore points to go to. I have created many test restore dates to see if they will stay, but they are always gone.

Thanks

I don't have an answer to your problem, but I'd like to relate a similar issue I'm experiencing:

I have a Dell 2400, and last month I had to reformat the hard drive and reinstall everything.  Since then, my System Restore has not functioned properly.  It will save restore points for a few days, then suddenly delete ALL of them.  I checked the XP system logs, and discovered that an unexpected error was causing this glitch.  So far I've noticed two particular error messages.  I've submitted these error messages to Dell, but they don't know what to make of them.  Here is one:

< while processing the file 'most.trust ..  - ads.lnk' on the volume
'HarddiskVolume2'.  It has stopped monitoring the volume>>

If there is a HardDisk Volume 2 on my computer, then that's news to me.  I have not partioned anything.

These are the steps that I have taken to fix the System Restore glitch, none of which has proven to help:

1)  I turned off System Restore, rebooted, and turned System Restore back on.  This clears all restore points, and new ones are created....for a few days.  Then an unexpected error occurs and all restore points are erased.

2)  I installed and ran Spy-Bot Search and Destroy and Ad-Aware 6.  Both programs found a few files, which I then deleted.

3)  I have the XP firewall turned on; Norton AV 2003  is running, set to scan everything and update itself.  It has never reported an infection.  I also have Windows Update set to check for updates automatically.

4)  I regularly delete all my cookie files and empty the TEMP folder.

5)  Just yesterday, I went to PCPitstop.com and ran their free computer check-up program.  It reported a spyware file (RNATHCHK.EXE) associated with RealPlayer.  According to PCPitstop, this file sometimes causes resource or system stability problems.  Using their instructions, I disabled rnathchk.exe by renaming it RNATHCHK.OLD and rebooting.  Now it no longer shows up in the MSConfig lineup.  I'm waiting to see if doing this has any effect on my problems with System Restore.  I doubt it, but we'll see.

I forgot: I also reinstalled System Restore using the XP SP1 CD-ROM.  But again, that didn't fix anything.

Two other things about the RNATHCHK.EXE file.  To be more specific, it's associated with the RealOne Player.  Also, if this file is listed in Task Manager, you will have to terminate it there before renaming it RNATHCHK.OLD

Maybe when Service Pack 2 for Windows XP is released later this year, our System Restore problems will be fixed.  Unlikely, but something to hope for.

I called Dell's tech support about my problem with System Restore, and the support rep wanted me to format my hard drive and reinstall everything.  I told him thanks, but no thanks!

Just for clarity's sake, did you actually check your XP System Logs?  I didn't receive any error messages either.  I just noticed them when browsing thru the logs.

I've got another suggestion to consider.  I went to a website that gives detailed explanation's of XP's System Log error messages.  I typed mine in, and there was this suggestion.  Perhaps it will help you:

From a newsgroup post: "I recently suffered from the identical problem, and tracked the offending “.lnk” file in my sr event log entry down to RealOne v.2 player's recent clips history folder. The “.lnk” file in my case contained multiple fields, a “C:\Program Files\...” path to realplay.exe, followed by a “/startpos:00.00.00.0” parameter, and then a path to the clip file itself. I purged RealOne’s history list and switched off the clip history option in all users on my home system, and so far, the problem has not recurred".

I just followed the above steps.  Time will tell if that solves the problem.

Not a lot on this but some suggestions.

Check Your Device Drivers.
If you have it uninstall Real Player.
Disable your System Restore and run these 2 commands checking SR after each one.

chkdsk /r
sfc /scannow

Lawnmowerguy ............Sorry I didn't check syatem log when I first replied, I did just now. This is my error message which started 11/03 and the last on 2/11/04.

(The System Restore filter encountered the unexpected error '0xC000007F' while processing the file 'desktop.ini' on the volume 'DP(1)0x7e00-0x1f58a00+1'. It has stopped monitoring the volume)

If I understand these messages, it is saying when it stops monitoring it is deleting the restore point. Is that right?

Since my error message is differant then yours what is the website to check these XP System error messages?

Thanks

Yes, when System Restore stops monitoring a drive, it deletes everything.  At least it does on my computer.

Here is the URL to learn more about the error messages: http://eventid.net/search.asp

Thanks Lawnmowerman ........I'll check it out.

Maxd ........what am I checking device drivers for? I ran sfc/scannow and I guess all files are in place as it finished checking and shut off. I tried chkdsk/r but it said cannot run, being used by another process. I also uninstalled the real player, I never use it any way.

What now?
