System Restore

Dell Dimension 2350
OS Windows XP Home SP2
=====================

I am not able to get System Restore. It shows at the end "Restoration Incomplete".

Please advise what to do.

Thank you.

Are you talking about System Restore to a previous date?

Rocasan,

The problem is caused by a corrupted restore database. To correct it go to Start|Control Panel|System|System Restore tab. Turn off System Restore and restart the computer. Return and enable System Restore again. This will delete all your existing restore points, but they do not work in any case.

Hi Denny,

I would like your opinion on this program:
http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt/

It automatically creates a complete backup of the registry on daily basis.

I quote from here:
http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt/erunt.txt

"In Windows NT and 2000, the registry is never backed up automatically, and in XP it is backed up only as part of the bloated and resource hogging System Restore program which cannot even be used for a "restore" should a corrupted registry prevent Windows from booting."

So my questions are:
Is it true that System Restore is resource hogging?
Are there any disadvantages if you completely disable System Restore and use this program instead?

Thanks a lot.

ALBrando,

Is it true that System Restore is resource hogging? Hogging is a relative term, but many feel that System Restore does use too much storage. I have lived with it for years and it has saved my bacon a couple of times. The answer also depends on how heavily you stress your hard disk space. I run a very conservative system--55% free on a 40GB hard disk after four years. ERUNT offers a more efficient answer, however.

Are there any disadvantages if you completely disable System Restore and use this program instead? System Restore saves a bit more information than simply a copy of the registry but not enough to make it preferable to ERUNT. One major advantage offered by ERUNT is that in the case of a corrupted registry ("Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM") ERUNT can restore the system from outside of Windows using a good copy of the registry, while System Restore cannot, and the standard corrective procedures for a corrupted registry (using Recovery Console) are not 100% successful.

Your question has resulted in my finally getting around to installing ERUNT on my system. One of those things I "really should do some day."

Hi,

Did deleting all existing restore points resolve the System Restore issue?

Here are some tips on adjusting disk space usage and keeping System Restore healthy:

I use system restore, but have ERUNT save the registry as backup now and then, or prior to an app install or system change I'm not sure about.
