System Standby & SP2 - Problem

Hello Everyone:

Found a problem that I just can't fix... Installed SP2 a few weeks ago; install went without a hitch. However, prior to SP2 I could put my computer into the "Standby" mode for whatever reason - then come back later on - "Wake it up" and connect to the internet. Now - with SP2 - I can't do that!

I can still use standby - but when I "wake up the machine" I've lost my internet connection. The only way I know to get it back is to reboot. Here's a list of things I've tried - let me know if I should try something else!

>> My NIC Card is an Intel PRO/100 VE - integrated with the motherboard...

  1. Release / Renew IP Address
  2. Upgraded the driver to Intel's latest set (Version 9 something)
  3. Dowgraded to the original driver included with the system
  4. Set the following Parameters in PROSET Wired Manager:
    1. Turned off Power Saving (in Windows Device Manager as well...)
    2. Changed PME (Power Management Setting) to allow wake-up from sleep states
    3. Changed Wake-On-Link to Forced
    4. Changed Windows to "Never" put the device in Standby / Low Power
    5. Changed Wake-On-Link Subsettings to "Directed Packet"
    6. Changed Wake-On-Link Subsettings to "Magic Packet"
  5. Changed BIOS to S1 Sleep State

None of the things seem to work! Any ideas? (This is not a laptop computer - and I am connecting to a wired network - no bluetooth...)

All help is greatly appreciated!

Dan, I'm having about the same problem but I have dial up, so I disconnect from my IP after running liveupdate in NIS2005. Put my PC in stand-by mode ,come back later and it will not wake up. Have to shut down and reboot. I've updated my BIOS to the latest version to no avail. So, if you find out something let me know also, Klono.

I am having the exact same problem.  Has anyone been able to find a solution for this????

Hello Everyone:

I have yet to find a solution for the issue - even after calling Intel and Microsoft. Microsoft and Intel seem to pass the buck between each other. According to Intel - the issue is caused by the way SP2 uses DHCP and IP configurations.

Otherwise - I have no information. However, I can tell you that I have spoken with my colleagues at work (with MCSEs; MCSAs; or A+ / Network+ Certifications) and, after reviewing my troubleshooting steps, they see no reason why I (we) still have issues with Standby...

I just received another E-mail from a "High Level" Software Engineering at Microsoft. He tells me to "wait" for a driver update from Intel...

Go figure...

I'm glad to hear I'm not the lone man on the island...

Thanks Dan.  Would you mind posting a reply to this issue when/if a fix is released.
Thanks.

I have resolved the issue (I think)

Intel has released an update (version 9.1) - which seems to have resolved the issue. Here's what you need to do to install the update ---

WARNING: You will perform a driver update - which may inadvertently harm your system. Perform steps at own risk --- these drivers are NOT supported by Dell.

It may be wise to create a system restore point right before you do any of this - just in case you are unhappy with the results....

Ok - with the warning out of the way :) - let's start. First thing you need to do is correctly identify your NIC card.  The new driver (provided by Intel) - can be used on any of the following NICs

 Intel® 82540EM Gigabit Ethernet Controller
 Intel® 82540EP Gigabit Ethernet Controller
 Intel® 82541EI Gigabit Ethernet Controller
 Intel® 82541GI Gigabit Ethernet Controller
 Intel® 82541PI Gigabit Ethernet Controller
 Intel® 82543GC Gigabit Ethernet Controller
 Intel® 82544 Gigabit Ethernet Controllers
 Intel® 82544EI Gigabit Ethernet Controller
 Intel® 82544GC Gigabit Ethernet Controller
 Intel® 82545EM Gigabit Ethernet Controller
 Intel® 82545GM Gigabit Ethernet Controller
Intel® 82546EB Dual Port Gigabit Ethernet Controller
 Intel® 82546GB Gigabit Ethernet Controller
 Intel® 82547EI Gigabit Ethernet Controller
 Intel® 82547GI Gigabit Ethernet Controller
 Intel® 8254x Ethernet Controllers
 Intel® PRO/100 M Desktop Adapter
 Intel® PRO/100 S Desktop Adapter
 Intel® PRO/100 S Dual Port Server Adapter
 Intel® PRO/100 S Management Adapter
 Intel® PRO/100 S Server Adapter
 Intel® PRO/100 VE Desktop Adapter
 Intel® PRO/100+ Adapter
 Intel® PRO/100+ Management Adapter
 Intel® PRO/1000 F Server Adapter
 Intel® PRO/1000 Gigabit Server Adapter
 Intel® PRO/1000 GT Desktop Adapter
Intel® PRO/1000 MF Dual Port Server Adapter
 Intel® PRO/1000 MF Server Adapter
Intel® PRO/1000 MF Server Adapter (LX)
 Intel® PRO/1000 MT Desktop Adapter
Intel® PRO/1000 MT Dual Port Server Adapter
Intel® PRO/1000 MT Quad Port Server Adapter
 Intel® PRO/1000 MT Server Adapter
 Intel® PRO/1000 T Desktop Adapter
 Intel® PRO/1000 T Server Adapter
 Intel® PRO/1000 XF Server Adapter
 Intel® PRO/1000 XT Server Adapter
Intel® PRO/1000 XTL Low Profile Server Adapter
 Intel® PRO/100B Adapter

Once you've determined that your NIC is on the list - here is what you need to do (be sure to follow the steps closely)

As long as your card is on the list - you can use the link below to download the driver - it's compatible with XP Home and Pro

  1. Go to: http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df/filter_results.asp?strOSs=44&strTypes=PLU%2CDRV%2CARC%2CUTL&ProductID=407&OSFullName=Windows*+XP+Professional&submit=Go%21
  2. Download Driver Set PRO2KXP.exe (Option 8 -- Version 9.1 -- Release 10/25/04)
  3. Be sure to click --SAVE-- -- NOT OPEN -- when the download box appears
  4. Save the file to a readily accessible location - you will need it in a few minutes
  5. Go to Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel (or click START - RUN - and type "appwiz.cpl" in the box -- without the quotes)
  6. Remove Intel PROSET Manager (someting like that) and Intel Wired Network Base Drivers (something like that)
  7. Reboot your PC -- Make sure you downloaded the new drivers - you may not be able to access the internet again!
  8. When you get back into Windows - you'll see the "Found new hardware" wizards - and the automatic driver installs provided by XP. When everything settles down - proceed to step 9.  You don't have to worry if the auto-install fails - we'll install the newest drivers in the next step (9).
  9. Navigate to where you downloaded the driver and run the .exe file to begin the install
  10. The install will extract files onto your hard disk - then pop up a wizard to install the drivers.
  11. When the driver install begins - click the first option (something like install drivers) to begin the actual driver install
  12. Once the install begins - sit back, relax - nothing you need to do anymore.
  13. When the install is complete - Reboot your PC - then proceed further.

Once you reboot - your issue "should" be resolved. However, if you still have trouble - do the following:

  1. Open Device Manager (Under the System control panel applet - Hardware Tab)
  2. Expand Network Adapters
  3. Open your Intel Adapter
  4. Click the Power Management Tab - uncheck all the boxes
  5. Click the Advanced Tab - Click Power Saver Options in the list box - Click Properties
  6. Uncheck both boxes

That should resolve your problems. However, perform upgrades at your own risk - as they are not support by Dell.

Dan, I did the driver update you suggested, and it did not help my standby problem. Symantec had me uninstall NIS2005 again with deleting all folders and files and reinstall with the newest liveupdate version and it still hangs when coming out of standby. Somebody please help! Klono

It appears that my computer has "relapsed" as well --- I'll keep trying...

Dan, I did the driver update you suggested and I replied that it didn't work . Well I deleted the new driver and went back to my old one with a re-installation, and it's been almost a week now and my PC is coming out of standby just fine. I can even run NIS liveupdate and it still works. Go figure, I will keep monitoring it to see if anything develops and will let you know. Klono
