System32 folder

You can customize how it opens by changing the properties for the Windows Explorer icon and replace the Target field with:
%SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /n, /e, c:\yourfolder

This also works with Windows Professional and Server.

I was aware of the MS information but I couldn't figure out how this would apply to my problem since the system32 folder appears on startup of windows and not when I click on Windows Explorer icon. By the way, the setting I have is default, %SystemRoot%\explorer.exe.

Something in the startup sequence of windows and my programs, (probably the hp scanner program I just installed) is causing it. I suppose if I uninstall the hp program and it goes away I will know for sure.

I did uninstall and reinstall and still the same problem. Finally, I checked msconfig\startup and saw a checked box that had no description. I unchecked the box, rebooted and now everything is back to normal. The box was located at Software\microsoft\windows\current version\run. I've also run virusscan all files and came up clean. I can only surmise that the hp install did this?

Sorry to bother you but did you ever find out how to have the system 32 folder not come up when you start windows.
