SYSTEM32 missing or corrupt

Please can someone help this semi computer literate with my problem?!!

I have a Dell Latitude D600.  When I turn it on it starts ok with the Dell logo, but it then comes up with the following:

"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:

\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM.  Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair."

My computer came pre-loaded so I have no Windows CD's although I have a key code for it on the back of my laptop.  Is there anyway I can fix my computer and save the data on it too?  If not what is the cheapest way of fixing it.

All help gratefully received!!!!!

If you have a buddy with an xp sp3 cd then you can use that for the repair.

Have you tried pressing F8 if you have vista, or ctrl + F11 if you have XP when you see the dell splash screen, and trying to do a repair from there.
