System32\DRIVERS\pci.sys missing or corrupted
I have a Dimension 4600 with XP Pro installed. Windows recently completed an automatic update, however, when the attempted to restart I now receive an error message stating:
"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: System32\DRIVERS\pci.sys
You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair.
The Windows blue screen displays and then the white bars begin across the bottom of the page and then the system sets from several minutes before giving me the error message. The total white bar moves about 1 1/2 inches and stops.
I can not start up in Safe Mode, the system will not default back to previous settings. The only CD I have is the "Reinstallation CD" that came with my system a few years ago. This the first time I have ever had a glitch with this thing. Trying to avoid an entire reinstallation.
Not sure what the next step should be........any guidance would be appreciated.

I take it that is happening after you select "R" to begin repairs from the Recovery Console. If so, press F12 on bootup and run the Dell diagnostics on your hard drive. It is possible that it has failed. Your "Reinstallation CD" is a copy of Windows XP and is the CD that should be used to effect the repair.
